Packing Tips for the Ultimate Thanksgiving

The holidays are upon us and that means lots of travel. This can overwhelmingly painful for many since the joy of packing is right up there with moving. The experience is just on a much smaller scale, but it still stings if you can't get it right.

It does not have to be brain surgery, you just need to realize you DO NOT need to bring the kitchen sink. Thanksgiving may be somewhat of a fashion show to most, but nothing more then a carry is needed for 5 days of travel. I am very serious about this:)

Let's take it step by step. Shall we begin with the suitcase? A compact, cute, rolling carry on is your best bet. Stay away from black when it comes to any suitcase. Let this Diane Von Furstenberg $90 piece pop against everybody else's boring black. You will never lose your patterned, bright option again! This duffel style is also slightly smaller then your average carry on, but is extremely expandable and has many pockets to store things separately.

Since I am only allowing one suitcase per person, it is time to learn how to make the most of your small space. Roll it up. This method can easily double the amount that you get in your suitcase. It also saves you from wrinkled clothing!! Think about that, there are no folds so there are no creases when you take everything out. You will be able to stuff things in corners and spaces you never thought were useful. Do not waste any opportunity! Use your shoes to put socks and underwear in. Every space should be utilized.

Just in case you do come across a wrinkle or two, owning a mini steamer/iron is necessary. For $30 you can instantly look like everything just came from the dry cleaners. If you don't have time to pick one of these babies up, you can hang your wrinkled clothes in the bathroom with you when you shower. The steam helps to loosen up the creases, but nothing works like the portable steamer will.....

The other quick items that you should keep on hand are a sewing kit, double sided tape and a tide stick. Each of these can be a life saver when a wardrobe malfunction hits. The sewing kit will tighten up that loose button, the double sided tape will fix a ripped hem or possible low cleavage situation and the tide stick will get out the gravy. Three items that will save the day.

Now let's talk clothing. What do you actually roll up in your cute suitcase? Packing for a trip is all about great foundation pieces with a few pop items. Accessories are your friend and will change up the look and feel of every piece you bring. Start simple, think basic. This is a great example, a black dress will be useful from day to evening. We are not after skin tight clothing, after all, this holiday is all about eating! Empire waist or silhouette skimming styles are your best options. Empire is fitted just below your bust leaving your tummy the chance to expand. Silhouette skimming styles are comfortable, do not look like a potato sack and still leave room for LOTS of turkey.

Tights are a quick way to change up your black dress for different activities you may be attending. Bring a few pairs, you may not wear all of them, but these are reasonable options that can be stuffed into your suitcase anywhere. Choose patterns for extra funky and solids for simplicity.

For even more casual days during your holiday, plan on having 1 pair of jeans. Yes, I said one. A basic skinny style is all you are going to need if you follow all of my packing rules. They should be darker in color so they can go from day to night, lots of versatility. The skinny style is easily tucked in the boots you will also be bringing. More on that later... In addition to your jeans, choose 2 sweaters, one thinner and one super cozy and thick. The thicker one will be what you travel in. You always want to wear your bulkier items during travel leaving more room for other clothing in your suitcase.

The other choice for a bottom half is black leggings. This means that all of your layering pieces have to be slightly longer to cover your bum. If your leggings are thinner, add a pair of tights under them. You know you packed them!

Meagan Fox may look a bit sloppy, but she has her foundation pieces in order. Make sure to pack lots of different T shirts, tanks and long sleeve T's. These are the perfect backdrop for everything else you have brought!

Just like this picture and all before it, you better bring your best boots. You can bring up to 2 pairs. You are wearing one pair while you travel so you will pack the other one. People get crazy with shoes and keep throwing them in, but this is your worst enemy! They add weight and take up too much room. Aside from 2 pairs of boots, you may want to grab a pair of heels just for the dressier activities, but no more. Stop the shoe insanity!

Last up to really complete your holiday packing is accessories. These are what is going to make every foundation piece you have brought really become an outfit. Do not think that I have told you to pack super boring items! I have told you to pack super simple items that can styled fabulously different!!! Here come tons of scarves, hats and jewelry. You can really stuff as much as you want into your suitcase so this is where you have options when you get there. You never know how you are going to feel each day and maybe you want to switch it up at the last second, let your accessories do the switching. Buy a great traveling jewelry organizer that can be filled to the brim. Think everything. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings.... Scarves are also fun and can be stuffed into your shoes right along with your underwear and socks. Have fun with this category!

The finale to your holiday looks is going to be one fabulous medium sized neutral bag. This can mean anything to you! Pick a bag that is super versatile within your style and can be worn day to night. This Marc Jacobs bag is a perfect example of something that is sassy and realistic. It is your "one personal item". You can stuff it to the brim on the way to your holiday, and they use it as a cute purse any where you go while you are there. It is expandable and yet flattens out just as easily when there is nothing in it. Wonderful.

I think you should be ready to go now. Packing is just a nightmare until you buckle down and do it following the above rules. You need to stop worrying what you didn't bring and focus on what you are going to bring. With the right basics, you can build any look through accessories. And always remember, unless you are in the middle of no where, there is a store just around the corner.....

Museum Chic: Getting Glam for the Guggenheim

It is rare when you live somewhere that you take time out of your busy schedule to actually SEE your city. I live in one of the most culturally diverse towns on earth and I have only been to 2 museums in 6 years. Shameful. So when my friend Linda suggested we make our way uptown to pop into the Guggenheim, I was thrilled. Culture here I come.

The museum is located on the upper east side. If you know anything about anything (or watch Gossip Girl), you know that the UES is full of high class fashion. I love to play a new fashion part everyday, so this was a great opportunity for me to go over the top. When I met Linda her first reaction was, "Why are you so fancy?" Because I can be Linda, because I can be. Do I need a better reason? Neither do you, dress up because you want to!

I had no idea what I was walking into, which is kind of the way I like it. Surprises are fun. Apparently it was the first day of artist Maurizio Cattelan's exhibit. It was seriously mind blowing. I am not a "museum" type of girl, but this was awesome. It is hard to tell from the picture what was going on, but let me do some quick explaining. Instead of hanging everything on the walls as Guggenheim exhibits are usually displayed, Cattelan said he would only show if everything was hung from the ceiling. As you circled up the winding ramp, every step gave you a different perspective and new pieces of art popped out at you. Cattelan had a fascination with mortality, so much of the art included actual dead animals, including several dead horses. Bizarre and totally cool. Completely worth the 18 bucks it cost to get in.

Now that we have the art out of the way, let's get back to the fashion:) It may be difficult to fully re-create my museum chic look because I always shop at sample sales, consignment stores and designer discount, but here is my best try.

My gray coat was purchased several years ago at a fabulous sample sale store called Cadillac's Castle in New York City. I don't think I paid more then $100 bucks for it. Unfortunately, this Walter by Walter Baker coat is no longer available.... Anywhere. So here is a much more expensive option by Valentino. Totally an investment so you have to take that into account when spending $1000 on a coat. The key is to have it cinch at the waist, slightly flaring until it ends just above your knees. It is a great shape for almost any body type.

Next up, my awesome rabbit fur scarf by Adrienne Landau. Of course I purchased mine directly from the showroom during a sample sale, but it is not SO unoriginal that you can't find a similar one. This option by Joseph is just over $100. The key to why I love my scarf so much is the slit in one side that allows you to put the other side through. You can pull it tight and keep yourself nice and warm or leave it loose for a stylish accessory. Rabbit is one of the least expensive furs and yet it looks super luxurious. Needless to say, this is the most affordable option.

I actually did find my exact sunglasses. I love them and they were the least pricey pair I looked at! That never happens. By Vince Camuto, this is the first year that his shoe line has extended into accessories and clothing. He even has a few pop up stores here in NYC. His new line features fun, trendy pieces that are really not that expensive. Take these big frame black sunglasses for example, they are only $55! That is great for a quality pair of sunnies. They are the perfect topper to any ensemble if you are going for the "rich and fabulous" look. We all need to be super fab every now and then....

And for the final piece.... Unfortunately there is no way you can find my awesome hand knit beret because it actually is hand knit.... By my mommy! Often times we bring our creative talents together. I design something and she actually makes it. This fun beret is a great example. I love the color and it adds a touch of fun to any look. Additionally, it is a good weight so I can wear it inside and outside. Fashion for every temperature. This example is a little more blue, but provides the same amount of fun. At $15 from Sears, you really can't beat it.

So next time you have a reason to go a bit over the top, do it. Why not be the most fabulous person there? Why not wear all of those items that you would never put together? Have your friends ask you why you are so fancy and own it. You are fancy because you are fabulous and you can't help it.

Gray is the New Black

If Serena loves gray, then it must be the new black. With colder months coming, we need more then just the normal neutrals. Black is so yesterday. Truth be told, I am never opposed to the simplicity of black or brown as your choice for a neutral, but try something new. Try gray.

I am absolutely loving this look on Blake Lively for her character in Gossip Girl. It is gray, gray, gray and it looks good, good, good. I seriously cannot seem to stay away from it this fall. Every look I put together ends up so darn gray. So I am just going to go with it and consider it my signature of the season. And now it can be yours too.....

There are so many options when choosing how to bring the lifeless color into your look. It may seem drab, but it is just the thing that is going to set your look apart from your sea of friends. Take Blake for example, most people would have chosen a black boot, she went gray. Go for slightly different by choosing this color, but not jumping from the cliff. Push yourself stylishly.... just a little:)

Another option that I absolutely love is doing a brown boot with gray tights. Reese has it spot on. It throws off the look from "normal" just the right amount. Tights are an important accessory during the colder months and can not only add excitement to your look, but they can extend the wearability of a lot of your pieces. Like dresses and skirts!
Stop buying black everything all of the time. If you try one new thing this season, try gray tights.

Not ready for a super leap yet? Gray jeans are a safe way to enter the world of "new neutrals". Try out this pair by Seven. They are fantastic because they can go with black or brown. This makes a pair of gray jeans the most versatile you will ever own. If that isn't a selling point, I don't know what is!

And finally, the perfect topper to any look? An indoor/outdoor gray jacket. This piece will be useful from fall all the way through to spring. It can be worn as your jacket when it is a bit warmer out or under your coat as a layering piece for your look. The gray color makes the jacket transferable from warmer to colder months. What a perfect investment piece this Helmut Lang jacket would make to any gal's wardrobe.

So I think my argument has been proven. Gray IS the new black beyond a reasonable doubt. Search just slightly outside your comfort zone and you will quickly find that adding some gray is just the sunshine your wardrobe needs.

My Day at the Vintage Market: Fab Finds!

I am obsessed with a treasure hunt. There is nothing wrong with a merchandised store, but it is finding a diamond in the ruff that really gets me going. Lucky for me, New York City is FULL of vintage markets. Once a year, there is a massive affair at the Metropolitan Pavillion in Chelsea, and it is A-mazing.

I headed over with my girlfriends Allison and Jackie to find something fabulous. There was a $20 entrance fee (I got a discounted pass) which is totally nuts. I actually paid to go shop, you know the sale must be good.

Styled by yours truly, Allison looked amazing in her rabbit vest. It was the maiden voyage for this great piece. Very in this season. I threw on my new Sandro hat and leather jacket, both purchased at a consignment store. Notice the black cat suit underneath. This was quite strategic. I planned on trying on a lot of stuff with no dressing room and instead of being naked in the middle of the pavilion, I put everything on OVER this look. How genius!
How nuts is this? I look like an over-sized blue sheep. This is great for a "fat" day because no body can see a damn thing. Prada designed this for 2011 and they must have been on some sort of hallucinogen when they did it. Thank you for drugs because this is awesome. It called to me from the other side of the pavilion. There was no way you could miss this from a million miles away.....

And then there were gold chains. Lots of them. The truth is that although I loved all of them, they were WAY overpriced. Since I have been doing this for so long, I am pretty aware of what things are worth. Even though I may love something, I always question the price tag. I am not made of money here! And even if I was, I would still ask, "Is this worth the price?". These chains are something that you can find any suburban Salvation Army for $5 to $10. They were selling them for between $80 and $125! I couldn't do it. Talk about a mark up.

After hours of picking through tons of vintage wares, I only walked away with two pieces. Needless to say, I was not pleased. I went there to spend my hard earned cash! If I am going to pay a cover charge to shop, I am going to shop damn it. I do LOVE my gold belt with tassel. It is adjustable so I can wear it around my waist or on my hips. At $55, I will say I think it was a bit overpriced, but I loved it. I also think my mind was a bit frazzled because everything seemed to be so expensive so 55 bucks seemed cheap. Even stylists who question price tags get confused:) I also got this leopard scarf which was definitely vintage because it smelled old. I am half kidding. I think it will look fabulous with a large, crystal vintage broach. Now I just need to buy one. It is a great indoor/outdoor accessory.

It may have been a less successful shopping trip then I had hoped, but all in all, it was definitely worth the time. I love treasure hunting!!

A Stylist Cleans Out Her Closet

Holy what? It looks like a bomb went off in my closet. Very scary. When you spend all of your time in other people's closets, sometimes your own gets completely out of control. It is not a good sales pitch for new clients, so I decided it was time to fix the crazy.

Honestly, one of the biggest reasons to clean out your closet is because half the time you forget what you own. This is not my problem. I have a huge brain in reference to memorizing not only my own wardrobe, but my client's as well. I also got super lucky and found an apartment with a walk in closet, not normal in NYC. This unfortunately means that I can continue to fill it up and fill it up and fill it up..... That is not always a good thing for anyone.

I made a strong decision to eliminate all of my "cheaper" clothing. I am 32 and work with people that have amazing clothes, I must fit the profile. It was time to brand my own style as sassier, classier and super designer fabulous. Out with (some) of the old, in with the new!

Cleaning out your closet is all about re-trying on your wardrobe to make sure you still love it. Obviously there are pieces that need to go at first glance, but then there is the "maybe" pile. Sometimes this requires a second eye (that is why I have a job), but what does a stylist do who is suppose to be an expert? Well, I bring over my friend who is also very fashionable because everybody needs a second opinion!

This fur vest is no old piece. In fact, it still has a tag on it. I have been searching high and low for the perfect fur vest with the perfect price tag and 2 long years later, I found it. $180 by Adrienne Landau at Century 21. I am in love.

After four and a half long hours, my closet was finally done. Three garbage bags and three shopping bags later, my soul was cleansed. My lucky friend Jackie walked away with the three shopping bags full of clothes, shoes and jewelry. I felt it was my good deed for the month. One man's trash (or in this case, cute stuff), is another lovely ladies treasure. Lucky girl. The rest was sent to Salvation Army. Anything that was good enough for consignment was given to Jackie. I figured making a few bucks from my old pieces wasn't as good as seeing my friend wearing it:)

Clean and in order, my closet not only looks amazing, I feel amazing. I am actually back to wearing everything I own and now I know exactly what I need to "fill in the holes" of my wardrobe. Now I have a small shopping list (at least in my world) and I am focused..... Until I find something amazing that I have to have. Oops:)

Alice and Olivia: Voted Best Pants

Pants might just be the enemy sometimes. They never seem to fit perfectly. Well have no fear, I have a designer that seems to hit the nail on the head every time.

Enter Alice and Olivia by Stacey Bendet. Almost all of my client's own at least one pair of these fabulous pants (including myself). She just really seems to understand a woman's curves, most notably, a woman's waist. Jelly roll is never pretty. You know, the part of your stomach that hangs over your pants. Not fun. That is the genius of the Alice and Olivia design. There is a thicker waist band at the top of the pants so they never cut into you. Please see the lovely example of these black wide leg pants. Divine.

Next up, skinny red pants. Do not be scared, I know these are not for everyone. You definitely have to be on the slender side, but curves are not rejected by this style. They still feature a wonderful wide waist band, but are much more modern in the silhouette. A cinched ankle is often a tough thing to pull off, but if your leg is on the straighter side, it can be your friend. Skinny pants are great because they can be worn with any size heel. Go from super flat to ridiculously high and they will always work! I love anything with millions of styling options:) Aside from the fun style, the color of these pants is a super pop to any look. Stop wearing dark colors on the bottom and switch it up. Who said you can't wear brights on the bottom and dark colors on the top? Try it!

Ah, leather bell bottoms. Who knew I would be suggesting these? They are the style of the season though, yes, bell bottoms are back. They are not for everyone, but if you have longer, skinnier legs, these are for you! It is very difficult to have a large flare at the bottom if you are not taller because the pants will just drag you down. They accentuate the lowest part of you, often shortening and certainly widening you. Not good. So if you are tall, have fun and go bold with a leather pair. It is never out and makes a fantastic statement when worn with any look.

So stop cursing out your pants and try on a pair of Alice and Olivia. They might just make you re-think your hatred.

The Best Accessory: Gold Watch Bonanza

I know I have already done a post long, long ago on gold watches, but this trend isn't going anywhere. Additionally, I literally just bought myself a new gold watch that I am totally obsessed with so I have "gold watch" on the brain. I have worn it everyday since I bought it as my recent posts show.

The truth is, in true bargain shopping fashion, I found what I considered to be the best deal of the century. I have been searching for quite some time for a watch that was not Michael Kors. I LOVE his line of watches, but everyone has them. I wanted to be not only different, but to somehow spend less then $250 (what his watches go for). It is a totally fair price for a piece that is going to be rocked 7 days a week, but there seemed to be nothing out there that had the same pop for the same price.

And then I came across a brand that has done me well. A few years back I went to the Armitron show room in NYC and they so kindly gave me a watch so I would keep coming back. Ah, perks of the job! I receive compliments on it every time I wear it and it keeps on ticking with no problems. I knew this baby had long term possibilities! A quick trip to Amazon and $70 bucks later, I was in gold watch heaven. Compliments keep pouring in and when I tell them the price they are shocked. Good job Salinger.

I was very close to purchasing a much more expensive style before I stumbled upon my Armitron.While traveling through Ireland this past summer, I found my dream watch. It is by a company that just came to the states, Folli Follie. Aside from the fabulous watch, they had an array of fun jewelry. Only problem was, it was $400. As noted, this was past my $250 limit. It is not that I didn't think it was worth it, I just couldn't see spending that much when I knew Michael Kors had a very similar, sturdy style for much less. So, my mission continued as I returned home.....

Let's still stand true to the most popular designer, Mr. Michael Kors. It really is a great watch. As you can see though, through this very scientific demonstration, these 3 watches are all super similar with 3 very different price points. I don't like to buy cheap, but I like to buy "reasonable". I think I found my perfect watch at my perfect pricepoint. Find what fits you.

The Royal Wedding Craze: My Haute Homemade Hat

Just like everyone else in this world, I was glued to the television watching the fashion show that was the royal wedding. And just like everyone else in this world, I jumped fully on the hat bandwagon. Us American folk don't ever get a reason to wear a hat, except to church and my Jewish heritage doesn't encourage Sunday Mass:) So, when 2 friends married, respectively, a Brit and an Irishman this summer, I was overjoyed.

In true Amy Salinger fashion, I was not going to be typical in my hat choice. I have never had a real reason to wear a fabulous hat before (except for dancing competitions), so I was ready to go big or go home. I decided I wanted something that could be worn all night, not just during the ceremony. And, it had to travel well since one of the wedding's was actually in Ireland. A fascinator was in my future.

A fascinator, quite simple, is a cross between a hat and a head piece. It is not meant to overtake your entire head, but merely act as an ornament. I went ahead and decided that designing and making my own was way more interesting then spending beau coup bucks on an overpriced, less original piece. Of course, in my world, I have the time to do this.

Styling a look for these two weddings (yes, I wore the same thing to both), was a bit like, "Which came first? The chicken or the egg?". I started with the hat, buying tons of huge flowers. But, when I went dress shopping and couldn't find anything suitable to match the idea in my mind, I chose the best dress I could find and went from there.

Love, love, love my bright and cheery 40's esque look. I also super love my friend Courtney's Tracy Reese (bought at designer discount!) orange look. Courtney is my best friend and a fashion designer. She is also the most crafty person I know which is why I enlisted her to actually create my hat. If I had made it myself, it would have looked like a 5th grade project.

Peacock feathers? Check. Crystals? Check? Glue gun? Definitely check. After several shopping trips (no one said home made meant easy), I had all of the items I needed to create my head piece. An afternoon later, my fascinator was ready for the world to see. I added in vintage clip on earrings (which I lost because I danced them off), a Swarovski crystal ring and a pair of $15 DSW shoes, and my look was runway ready.

Challenge yourself to really create your own look, enlist a fashionable and crafty friend, and you never know what you will come up with!

Out on the Town: Looking Chic and Affordable

Although I have become somewhat lazy about going out in my old age (I am a ripe old 32), I do still love the act of dressing up. Creating a look from head to toe will somewhat consume my mind the day of the event, if not weeks leading up to it. It really depends on where I am going and who I am going to see. I call it, "the curse of the fashion stylist".

This past Saturday, my girlfriends got together for a night on the town. This included me staying out for a whole 2 hours (if you don't include the pre-party at my friend's apartment). I warned you I have become somewhat "un-cool". Either way, I put on a cute, affordable and comfortable look for the evening.

I am all about finding the best deal and with this look, everything on me runs from free to designer discount to consignment. LOVE. Let's start with free. These black jeans (designer unknown), were given to me by a friend. She found them at a sample sale for a dollar (so not quite free), and figured they would fit someone for that price! With just a slight alteration at the waist, they were mine. With jeans costing up to $200 these days, this is quite the bargain!

Next up are my fabulous red suede booties. Totally stylish, totally comfortable. They are from Off 5th in Cleveland, Saks outlet store. I travel for good deals. They are a good color to make your look pop, not too overpowering. Muted reds are any girls friend.

As for the zebra top, I purchased it that day at Loehmann's, designer discount heaven. It was $30 from Romeo and Juliet. I spent the weekend eating and drinking my way through the universe so I needed something that would allow me to breath. Choosing a sheer top, paired with a black tank top, still showed off my silhouette without showing off my stomach. Perfection.

And finally, the accessories. Layer, layer, layer. My new Armitron watch for $70 is my favorite best friend these days. I wear it with everything. I searched high and low for an affordable gold watch. With everyone wear Michael Kors for $250, I refused to buy one and certainly not for that price. Add in tons of bangles with different widths and my giant blue stone ring from my mother's salon in Connecticut of all places, and my wrists are good as gold.

The final topper was my new Saks Fifth Avenue brand clutch bought at an East Village consignment store. This little gem found me (you don't search for specific things at crazy consignment stores) and I knew it would be a useful item in my repertoire. It is a neutral color even though it is not black or brown. For $65, the cost per wear will be well worth it.

So ladies, shop smart and think about your every purchase. Love what you buy and brand yourself is chic, stylish and affordable items!

Best and Worst Dressed: 2011 Emmy's

This year at the Emmy's I was seeing red. Not because I was so angry that the celebrities gracing the carpet looked so bad, but because they actually were all wearing the vibrant color. It was almost ridiculous, dress after dress came down the carpet and 50% of them were red!

The actress that topped the long list of stylish "reddies" was Lea Michelle. I was completely obsessed with her Marchesa floor length gown. The front was simple with a fabulous structured shoulder and the back was to die for. The draped shoulder perfectly complimented the swooping drape on the back of the dress. It really was sheer perfection. The simplicity of her hair and make-up allowed the dress to shine and keep her overall look young and sexy. And kudos to her trainer, you have to be in seriously good shape to pull off a floor length sheath dress. That sucker doesn't hide anything!

And now for the worst dressed (according to me:). I do dearly love Gwyneth Paltrow and her ability to choose bold and interesting red carpet options, but I felt this was a miss. I actually think that as skinny and toned as she is, the Pucci dress looked too tight. It showed off squeezed skin around her midriff. And what was with showing that area off in the first place? This would have been a great Grammy's dress, but Gwyneth, we are at the Emmy's here! The tulle shooting out from the bottom of the "top" part of the dress only solidified for me that it was WAY to crazy with this classy awards show.

And then there was the condom dress. Apparently "safe" dressing was on Julianna Margulies mind when preparing for the red carpet, only problem is that the dress was anything but! I also really love her and her style, but this strange space age concoction was just weird. I am often times much more constructive in my criticism, but sorry, it was just strange:) She could barely walk it was so tight! I think the final straw that threw it completely off was the structure of the bodice and the large, crystal beads. It really did remind me of a couture space suit.

So there you have it. My professional opinion has graced the internet and I am sure the world will be rocked. No matter what I think, the truth is that great amounts of effort go into the decisions of stylist's and their clients and I commend them for all of their valiant fashion attempts!

Missoni for Target: On the Scene

It has arrived.... Missoni for Target. The only problem is that it is already gone. I wish I was kidding. As the picture shows, by 10:30am this morning, Missoni had left the building. I thought I was so good showing up just 2.5 hours after Target in Queens opened, but apparently it wasn't good enough. I was told that just a half hour after the doors opened, everything was basically gone.

The best part of all of this is that I convinced my friend Jackie to come out to my place and then we would drive to Queens. Well, the car didn't start. So we hopped on the train and off we went to a store full of nothing. Thank God I am friends with people that have a sense of humor because a fashion show I promised and a fashion show you shall get.

When I say there was nothing left, I really mean it. We had to go to the kid's section just to play. My friend Jackie is teeny tiny so this plan was not all that bad. Unfortunately, the clothing was a bit of a let down.....

There were some pieces that were classically Missoni and other's that well, just looked cheap. Obviously the quality is going to be of lesser value since we are at Target and not Barney's, but you never want to be the girl wearing cheap, imitation Missoni.

In her best pout face, Jackie shows us what CAN work from the line. Some cute, throw on pieces that can put some funk in any look. Exactly what Missoni is all about. When buying a less expensive version of the original, go with non-fitted items. Accessories and loose silhouettes don't show off that the fit might not be perfect.

Try out a hat and gloves for example. It is the perfect Missoni pop to any ensemble. You know I look good in this hat made for a 2 year old. In fact, this line at Target is perfect for a youngster. You don't need to be spending crazy prices for the "real" thing. Have the best dressed toddler in town.

I do love this adorable dress. Easy, comfortable, stylish. Obviously it is a bit short, but if Jackie shrank to the size of an 8 year old it would be perfect. If it was her size, throwing on a dark pair of tights and high brown riding boots with be the best additions. Add a structured jean jacket and you are on your way!

Being a good sport, Jackie went the full mile. Without me even asking, she decided it was good for the post to model ALL of the items, including lingerie. Right over her pants, Jackie shows off Missoni's effort at patterned panties. Honestly, I think they are great!

In my professional opinion, it was definitely worth the trip to Target. If and when another shipment comes in, I will certainly be first (or 100th) in line. It is always good to mix and match high and low end pieces. Just use your discerning eye carefully and recognize the difference between inexpensive and cheap. It is a very fine line and never needs to be crossed!

Charles Nolan: Fab Designer

There is nothing better then strolling around for a full afternoon roaming in and out of amazing boutiques. It is not necessarily about spending every penny of your hard earned cash, it is about scanning the shopping scene and knowing what is out there. What are the newest trends? What pieces should you start saving for? What items do you need to own right now?!?

I enlisted the help of my oldest friend Allison for a Sunday date of B & B (otherwise known as brunch and boutiques:). We made our way through the Meat Packing district (known for it's shopping and restaurants, not for packing meat). We stumbled in many amazing boutiques. Needless to say, we came across a few gems along the way and found a new favorite of mine.....

Charles Nolan is a fantastic boutique in the meatpacking, not only was it merchandised to perfection, but the owner was so fabulous! Who said NY'ers weren't nice?

Talk about making the most out of a small space! In a place like NYC, obviously square footage is a commodity. Charles Nolan is one of the best small boutiques truly utilizing it's space. There was clothing, jewelry, vintage, home goods, you name it, they had it. This custom made dress was a featured corner that made the entire room shine.

One of my favorite areas of the store was the "vintage room". In a small section, probably originally a closet, I found my happy place. From floor to ceiling, Allison happily made her way through amazing find after amazing find. It was like a kid in a very tiny candy store. You had to really take your time to find each diamond in the ruff, but patience is a virtue, and having it really paid off in this situation!

This vintage fur and leather coat was my "piece de resistance". Frankly put, I would rock this thing all over town. It was one of their vintage pieces that just sang to me when I saw it. There is something to be said for putting on a deliciously stylish fur item that just instantly makes you feel luxurious. With all of the new and shiny garments out there, it is important to remember that the "originals" are sometimes still the best.

Monday morning is now here and my lovely day of B & B will only live on in this blog post. Try and always make time for a little B & B during your next Sunday because it just seems to make Monday so much easier......

Fashion's Night Out! Fab Parites, Fab Looks.

Believe it or not, this was my first Fashion's Night Out, otherwise known as FNO. I hosted an event the first year, was a good Jew and went home for Rosh Hashanna the 2nd year and finally went to all the parties this year. Totally worth the wait.

I got all dolled up for the big night and then promptly changed my entire look one minute before I had to walk out the door. Of course. I ended up wearing this vintage maroon dress from the 70's that I bought at a flea market in Chelsea. $25 purchase that had to be tailored for $95. I have worn it to weddings, afternoon drinking and now FNO. Worth the price.

I added a vintage warrior belt that I purchased at Salvation Army years ago. I threw on tons of bangles, from vintage to department store, added a jean jacket with the sleeves chopped off, and I was good to go. I was "this close" to throwing out the jean jacket from Forever 21 before i had the brilliant idea to re-vamp it into a vest. Genius!

Almost immediately after arriving, I darted across the busy crowd because I saw the most amazing necklace. On a truck that looked like it should be selling food, was a bevy of amazing pieces. A traveling store! The hostess just outside the Style Liner was wearing this unbelievable one of a kind necklace. I am in love. Big and over the top, it isn't for everyone, but it certainly will put a punch in any look!

From the most amazing necklace to one of the most interesting coats I have ever seen. The first spot I hit was Moschino. This piece obviously caught my eye. Never have I seen a high fashion house selling garments with teddy bears attached to the collar. Amazing. I really need to know who is going to buy this?? It was more humorous then anything. Needless to say, it was worthy of a picture!

As you stroll down the street, you never know what you are going to run into. This time, it was an outdoor rock concert at Vince. They covered the sidewalk with grass (so cool), and set up an area for the band. It defined the whole concept of FNO, a party on every corner.... Literally.

Moulin Rouge for anyone? Yes please. Another great "experience" of FNO was a red carpet set up for everyone to dress up like their fav Moulin Rouge character and take pictures. Sound cheesy? It totally was and it was totally awesome. It was a great excuse to stop and watch everyone make a fool of themselves. Always a good time. They had actors hired to play each character in the movie plus contortionists! It was truly fabulous.

The finale of the night was a prop posed shot. The new "it" accessory of the season is wide rimmed black glasses, why not go over-sized! It is time to go BIG or go home, it is FNO!

Overall it was a great night. Heck, it is one of the biggest parties of the year in NYC. Every store has free flowing alcohol and over the top promotions going on the get you into the stores. The streets are filled with people and visual stimulation for miles. It is what NYC is all about. Next year, same time, same place.

Fall Trends 2011

Fall 2011 is just around the corner and that can only mean one thing: It is time to reinvent yourself yet another time and make way for the best trends of the season! We all know that all trends are not made for all people. It is important to pick and choose what works best with your lifestyle and personality. Price points are just numbers and there are always less expensive options to fit any budget. You can be on-point this fall, stay within your financial range and look great re-branding yourself with successful style.

The female tuxedo is a trend that loves to come round and round and round….. It is sexy and sophisticated and makes any women, no matter what age or background, an instant power player with a vixen flare. Fit is key in any tailored piece such as a fabulous tuxedo. This Alexander McQueen piece at $2,240 is super pricey, but will live on forever. Purchase a cheaply made jacket or pair of pants and you will look exactly that, cheap. This does not mean you need to spend your entire piggy bank on a tuxedo. It just means that you either A) Need to pick either the jacket or pants to save a few dollars OR B) Opt for a middle of the road price point on the full deal and realize this is an investment. A great, tailored tuxedo will never go out of style and you can wear each piece over and over, styled many different ways. This is high on the "cost per wear" meter. Meaning, you are going to wear it for years to come so if you break down how much you spent on it vs. how much you will wear it, it is worth the price.

Designer's always tell me that they never look backwards, only forwards, but this next trend proves them very, very wrong. 60's Mod is back (yet again), so pull out all of those great items that have been hanging out for years. it is time to get the psychedelic party started and the first step is looking groovy. Alberta Ferretti's Fall 2011 certainly understands this. Mod essentially means lots of color, lots of graphic, bold prints and boxy silhouettes. You don't need to overwhelm yourself in this fall trend, just opting for one piece shows you are "in the know". The younger you are, the more you can brand yourself funky with this fun trend. If you are a more mature lady, choose a top or jewelry, nothing that will completely overwhelm you.

Kooky, mixed up prints are an easy way to get someone's attention when making a first impression, but make sure you manage this trend correctly. It is a fine line between crazy and stylish!Custo Barcelona, the designer of this dress, knows how to bring crazy and realistic together. If your personality is bold and vocal, then this is the perfect trend to represent your own personal brand through your wardrobe. Always remember your destination though, wearing an overwhelming print from head to toe at the office might be a bad idea. Leave the complete look for the weekend. But, choose a top or a belt to punch up your "work wardrobe" and be the talk of the office… in a stylish and positive way!

I love fur. I know this is a faux pas in many circles and I accept that I am not always PC (ask my friends!). Obviously there are many designers that side with me because the use of fur on beautiful clothing really isn't going anywhere. Burberry clearly loves fur and knows what to do with it, as this amazing sweater suggests. The newest trend for fall 2011 is fur on clothing. Not just as a jacket, vest or earmuffs, but actually worn as an "indoor" piece. It truly is a bit over the top, but heck, isn't that what great fashion is sometimes about? Now obviously this is a pretty expensive trend if you are not wearing faux fur. Don't "go for broke" if you can't afford it, just choose a very good faux fur as an alternative. It really can make your entire ensemble look incredibly cheap so please, I beg of you, be careful in your choice. If you question yourself at all, don't buy it. You always want to look expensive and put together no matter what. Successful style may be "faux" sometimes, but never cheap.

A trendy style that almost any gal can latch onto is the longer skirt which is very big for fall. The shorter you are the more difficult it is to wear, but as long as you keep any garment on your upper half ending at your waist, you should be fine. Proportions can be your worst enemy and your best friend. Keep any purchase flowing and fun, do not opt for stiff materials. This style is great for the girl who is a bohemian at heart. You can rock it at the office when styled appropriately and still feel like yourself. The best part is that it is universally awesome in that it can be worn any day of the week, work or weekend.

A trendy fall, a trendy (re-branded) you. Style represents who you are and who you want to be. What does your wardrobe say about you? When choosing your trendy fall 2011 pieces, always keep in mind what you want to project to the world. Clean out your closet and find current trends lurking in the depths of your wardrobe. Re-work them for this season. Purchase those great pieces that will advance your current wardrobe and style. Buy what you need. Use what you have.

Oscar's Best and Worst

The year's biggest fashion show was last evening and the stars did not disappoint. There was sparkle, there was shine, there was bright, there was nude, but, there was very little risk. I guess when you have people like me splashing our opinions all over the internet, magazines and television programs, it get a little intimidating to try something new and different. That aside, stylists put their best foot forward this season with some fabulous frocks.

At the very top of my list, Mila Kunis. She was sheer perfection in this purple lace and chiffon number by Elie Saab. The fit was spectacular to start. Do you know how hard it must have been to tailor the lace on her chest?!? Not to mention that the color was stunning and romantic. Her team did a great job of truly creating a look. It is never just about one thing, it is about the entire package. Her hair and make-up truly complimented the grace of the gown. I expected something louder with more of a WOW factor from Mila, but this choice could not have been better. It certainly had the WOW without the Holy Cow. LOVE.

And now for my least favorite... Nicole Kidman's dress almost killed me. I know that Jessica McClintock is a perfectly fine designer for proms across the country, but on a red carpet for the Oscars is not a proper spot. Now truthfully this was a Christian Dior frock, not Jessica McClintock, but you could have fooled me. It was tacky and looked like an overdone bejewled gown. Mr. Dior, really? Every element of this dress made me stop and shake my head, even more so because it came from the usually incredibly fashionable lady, Nicole Kidman. Not sure what motherhood has done to her, but of late, her choices have seriously concerned me. Sorry to be harsh Nicole, you know I still love you.

Now here is the love it or hate it moment. I am not really going either way because there are things I really love and admire about this dress and things that petrify me. Mainly, the keyhole making her breasts a moving target just put her on the worst dressed list for most. Cate Blanchett is a fashion forward lady who paves the way when it comes to edgy fashion, but this frock just missed the mark ever so slightly. I think it is interesting and and beautiful, but I just wish that it had been a square cut out, not a circle! The blush color mixed with the pop of yellow is so eye catching and different. I absolutely love the almost Star Trek like cut of the dress with criss cross back, but I continually come back to the boob circle. Make it stop!

So with awards season officially over, I will now hold my judgments.... for the moment. Style is subjective and I appreciate the effort that every starlet took this year to put some fabulous looks together (even if it was the work of their stylist). Fare the well until next year!

Top 5 Trends for Spring

It may still be freezing outside, but it is time to start thinking warm! Well, at least warmer. Spring trends are starting to make their way to stops around town and it is time to choose your favorites. Every season there are a few pieces that always stand out, trends are what make the fashion world go ‘round. Knowing these trends and understanding what works best on you will constantly keep you ahead of the fashion curve. Here are the top five fabulous styles making their way down the runway for spring:

They say orange juice is good for you, well apparently so is the color. Bright, citrus shades are all the rage this spring. Out with the bland neutrals and in with fun, deliciously loud color! Aside from being vibrant and brightening anyone’s day that you may encounter, the look also allows you to never get lost in a crowd! High fashion, fabulous color, useful in large groups, the choice of orange really seems like a no-brainer. If you are overwhelmed by the shade or feel that it washes you out, choose accent pieces like a purse or jewelry to stay on trend.

This style of jeans loves to make a comeback. Much like John Travolta, just when you think they are officially over, here we go again…. High waisted and extremely tight through the thighs before flaring out to widths unknown, bell bottoms are not for everyone. It certainly explains why the trend lasts a few years and then mysteriously disappears, only to re-appear once designers have forgotten this fact again. There is a love for bell bottoms, but it is from ladies with slender, long legs. If you are lucky enough to be in this category, rock the look like it is 1975. They are fun and flirty and can instantly add a youthful feel to your look.

And yet another style that has made its way from the ‘70s into 2011, clogs. Apparently the time travel machine was large enough for a few pieces. Often looked at as an orthopedic option or service industry footwear, the clog has never fully gone away, it just wasn’t exactly “a trend”. Spring 2011 has changed all of that, clogs are in. High, low, bedazzled, studded, these shoes are out in a big way. One of the best parts of this particular trend is that they are quite simply one of the most comfortable options you can buy. Seeing as they are designed for people with bad feet or individuals that stand all day, you can bet that strutting your stuff in these babies will be pretty cozy. Looking hot and comfortable never felt so good.

Sexy and sophisticated are two words that deserve to go together and with the explosion of sheers this spring, they can. It is just the hint of skin that classy ladies all over the globe are looking to show off. No need to put it all out there, just the idea is enough to get hearts racing. Whether it is draped, flowing or taught, sheer materials give an element of sexy danger with a feminine touch to any look. Be wary of cheaper versions as they can lessen the value of your outfit. Tailoring is very important in any piece with sheer materials because it is so easy for them to fall incorrectly. So choose wisely and add sexy sophistication to any ensemble!

January Jones: Style Star

A lot has been said about January Jones style. Love it or hate it, at least she always tries to be original! As a stylist, that is a huge plus for me. She really does always push the envelope and try to create something that sets her apart from the crowd.

Take her SAG 2011 ensemble above. I adored this Carolina Herrera look from head to toe. It is chic, sexy and stylish. The gold lace overlay gives it a classical feel with a funky and modern twist. The hair and makeup are perfection only adding to the look, not competing with it. With some of the over the top looks she has done recently, this was a nice change without taking away from her original sense of style. Yea January.

And then there was this little diddy. Now although the little girl in the "interesting" outfit behind her clearly doesn't think much of the dress, I think it is absolutely spectacular!!! The bodice, the color, the architectural feel... Phenomenal. This mint green Atelier Versace from the 2009 Emmy's is quite possibly one of my favorite January Jones looks ever. It is so impossibly different then anything we ever see on the red carpet, this factor alone should score her points. I love the structure of the top combined with the elegant flow of the bottom. It is literally wearable art. The bold hips with cut outs only make me jump even higher for joy. Love, love, love.

Alright I get it, people hated it. I can certainly understand why, but I do want to give credit where credit is due. This is a masterpiece of insane artwork. The construction of this Versace dress is so out of control that I can only imagine how fabulous it must be in person. The layers of fabric combined with the vibrant color make it a natural choice if you really want to stand out. The real question is "How do you want to stand out?" It is not always a positive to look SO different, but it did get people talking about her and she was in every magazine and newspaper. I think the real problem here was quite simple. The hemline should have matched in both the front and the back. I don't care if it was short or long, just not both! Of course there is the issue with her breasts looking like shooting targets (with a matching pair on her back), but I can overlook that and consider it part of fine art.

Surely I am going to be lambasted for loving this dress, but when I saw her walk out onto the red carpet in this va va va voom Versace dress, I was awestruck. She is truly a vision of sexy vixen mixed with hot 50's housewife. The juxtaposition of the soft retro hair to the modernity of this fringe dress is the perfect compliment. Honestly, who wears fringe except for flappers? January Jones to the Golden Globes, that's who. I will admit that it is a bit much is the boob area (although they look pretty good!), but aside from that it is one hot dress. If there had been a slight alteration the the straps, all could have been solved. They are currently angled allowing for spillage on the outside of the dress, never good. If they had been straight up and down, it would have created a cleaner, more toned down line.

So there you have it, my top pics from January Jones that stirred the pot just enough to get people talking. Love that. If there wasn't a bit of controversy on the red carpet, it would just be boring. So thank you Ms. Jones for always keeping it exciting and classy. It certainly doesn't hurt that you look like you do.

Hot Hats: Keeping Your Head Toasty This Winter

This man knows how to keep his head warm. Very warm. It may be a bit over the top, but he certainly does get that furry hats are the trend of the moment! I just think this might be overkill (yes, I meant that pun).

Now this is more like it. Fun, sexy, warm and yes, still a bit over the top. I live in New York City so if warmth means a bit over the top, I will take it. This aviator style is the new "it" thing all over the city and with good reason. It really does do its job by covering all of the necessary parts. If fur scares you, choose a faux fur for the same effect. There are also smaller versions that are not so overwhelming to your face. Choose what works for you while staying super stylish.

I love earmuffs. Depending on the temperature outside, they can be the perfect amount of warmth. Keeping your ears toasty is usually most of the battle. The other fantastic part about muffs is that they don't mess up your hair!! Yea for good winter hair. It is almost an anomaly.

It is clear that I love fur, but I know that is not the opinion for many in this world. Finding a pair that suits you is really what it is all about. Fur is fun because it adds some volume. You can go all Princess Lea without actually pinning two buns on the sides of your head.

And then there was the knit beret. I own a ton of these because my mom is the best knitting queen on the planet. I design and she creates. It really is a match made in heaven:)

The beret is fabulous for outdoors and indoors fashion. This way, it doesn't matter if you have a hat head because you are never going to take it off! It adds that boho chic element to any look. It isn't the warmest option, but if you choose a thicker yarn, it should block most of the wind and cold. Make it the pop of color in your look by picking a ruby or eggplant.

Finally, the fedora. Always awesomely stylish on anyone. It is nearly impossible not to look super cool when you throw one of these on. This wool option is great for the frozen months known as winter. It is definitely more about fashion then warmth with this hat, but sometimes I do believe in pain for beauty. My biggest gripe with this particular accessory is that when I actually arrive somewhere there is never anywhere to put it. So it is kind of a, "Does this go with my overall look?" type of piece because you will be rocking it all night long... All night... Oh, all night.....

So choose your head wear carefully and look stylishly warm for the next 4 months. Remember, the topper to your look can make or break the fabulousness. Choose wisely:)

Tell us about you and your business:
I am a fashion stylist and expert in New York City. I not only do personal styling to help the everyday gal or guy feel like and look like a celebrity, but I also work with magazines, television shows and commercials. I have appeared as a fashion expert everywhere from The Today Show to MTV to Martha Stewart Living Radio. I love to create beautiful images, but most of all, I love to make people feel fabulous about themselves. Everybody needs a boost of style inspiration to get us going sometimes and that is where an expert like me is your best friend!

How did you start this project?

I have always loved fashion and beauty growing up, but never realized it could truly be a full-time job. When I was about to graduate from college I realized that a "real job" was not for me so the search for a creative career began. I used my networking skills to contact the right people to ask for advice or opportunities. Utilizing my innate creative talent combined with learning from the right people, I created a styling business that allows me to style everyone from models to business women.

Who are your mentors?

I would say anyone that works hard and is successful is my biggest mentor! Talent can only take you so far, you need to really want success and have extreme drive when working in a creative and extremely competitive field. I strongly admire Andrea Lieberman who works with Gwen Stefani and is the co-creator of LAMB, one of my absolute favorite clothing lines. She truly thinks outside of the box and has developed some amazing looks that have helped to re-define current styles.

What inspired your business?

The people of New York City inspire my business everyday. The forward thinking of this fashion community sometimes even surprises me. They are constantly encouraging me to challenge my own styling capabilities and giving me new and fabulous ideas for future shoots and clients. Inspiration can truly come just from walking down the street in this city.

What kind of advice would you offer our members?
The best advice I can offer your members is to understand that how you feel when you walk out the door can affect your attitude and confidence all day long. People often call fashion superficial, but having been in the business for over 8 years, I can tell you that helping people to look more fashionable is the the best confidence booster. I have literally seen my personal clients start posing in the mirror and walking around on a "catwalk" like a model just by having on an amazing outfit I styled for them. Sometimes we forget that loving the way we look can ultimately change the way we feel. Being fabulous is a great gift for one's self. And in this holiday season, a great gift for someone else!!!

Let Them Eat Turkey! Hot Holiday Looks without the Guilt.

Who cares if you ate everything on your plate and then went for seconds? Unbuttoning one's pants during the holiday season just to keep from buying new clothing seems to be a pretty good tradition. But what if you could look cute all through December (and into January:) and still eat extra cranberry sauce and stuffing? You can.

Nicole Ritchie may be the worst example of someone gaining weight during the holiday season, but you can definitely take a cue from her cute sweater tunic. Add some leggings or jeans to this look and the loose, easy feel of the deep v-neck tunic is perfect for any gal feeling the stretch of the season. Although this piece is super over-sized, there is still an obvious shape and style. The v-neckline draws attention to your face keeping all eyes away from your mid-section. The difference in length between the front and back of the tunic may not be helping your cover-up cause either way, but it sure does look cute!

This piece is also a fantastic "I ate too much for a month" dress. It is an A-line silhouette which allows you to still show off your figure while keeping it loose around the stomach. A-line means it is fitted around the chest area and becomes wider as it gets to the bottom just like an A. How ingenious! The pattern on this dress is also your friend. It is true what they say about horizontal stripes, they do make you look wider. Picking a vertical pattern during this season is a fabulous idea! It will help give the illusion that you are longer and leaner, even though your body may be getting wider.....

This is my ultimate favorite look for the season. I am comfortable, I am cute, I am eating anything I want. Wearing a darker foundation like a black t-shirt, leggings and black boots, with a lighter, longer sweater, will keep the attention on your layering item. The sweater becomes the focal point while your actual body is a backdrop. Do not fret if you don't look like a supermodel in your black catsuit, no one can see it anyway! Stetchy materials are going to be your best option so your tummy can breathe! My only big rule is to make sure that your sweater fully covers your behind. No one want to see your backside in just leggings even if it is perfect. And anyway, isn't the point of this post that during the holiday season it might lose some of it's perfection? Got it, good.

The empire style dress will almost always work as a stylish choice for an expanding middle. Let's just call it like it is, this dress is focusing on your bust which will most likely be expanding as well during this time. There are positives ladies! The vertical pattern on the chest is also a bonus as I have already highlighted the importance of picking these types of patterns. The bell sleeve is a cute design, but it additionally draws attention away from your middle to your arms. Pick a scoop or v-neck design to encourage people's eyes to look upward even more. Opening your neckline is always a perfect choice for drawing attention away from you middle.

So there are just a few ideas for looking great even when you may not be feeling it. Style is not just for size 2 and 4's, we are all beautiful no matter what size we are.

I have been obsessed for a long time with the pair that create the unbelievable frocks known as the design house, Marchesa. Most likely you have seen one of their fabulously phenomenal creations grace the runway because they have been all the rage in Hollywood for some time now. There is good reason that the starlets of the moment are draping their bodies in Marchesa, their dresses are just simply amazing.

I think it is a cruel joke from God that co-designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig look just like supermodels and foster a creative genius far superseding most normal people. Jealousy does not begin to explain how I feel toward them. I will put my personal feelings aside for the love of their amazing pieces because I am a professional damn it and fashion is my business!

This dress on Jennifer Lopez worn at the 2007 Academy Awards was one of my favorites by the designers. She put aside her usual vamped up, sexy look for this flowing, Grecian gown. I actually saw this dress in person at Neiman's and was blown away by the workmanship. The crystals are as sparkly and big as you want them to be, but what surprised me most is that there were small crystals also sewn onto the entire gown adding that something special. Jennifer looked feminine, regal and like the A list celebrity that we all know she is.

Now this might be a bit over the top, but fashion is art and this Marchesa gown from their Spring '11 collection is just that. This thing is crazy. I cannot even imagine the pattern that is the backbone of this gown. It may not be walking down a red carpet (Though Chloe Sevigny could totally pull it off), but it will definitely grace the pages of high editorial fashion magazines.

Another dress from their spring collection is this armor inspired cocktail dress. This was a theme through many of their pieces in the collection and let me tell you, it was a pretty darn good theme. It is sexy and hard edged at the same time. Marchesa has a beautiful feminine sensibility to all their gowns so mixing the masculine energy of chain mail is borderline genius. LOVE.

So go save all of your pennies and buy a Marchesa dress for your new year's celebration. Or go to Neiman's and admire them just like I do:)

Who, What, WEAR?? The American Music Awards

I do love a good awards show. Last night, on the American Music Awards, it was simply a parade of over the top fashion and musical performances. That is my kind of programming, fabulous and fun.

Of course my intense focus was on what the fancy musicians, actors and other random attendees were wearing on their toned and trim bodies. Never in my life did I think that this lovely Monday I would be reporting that Taylor Swift was my best dressed. Her country curls and cat eye makeup are always on my annoyance radar and I think her ability to FINALLY switch it up threw me off! Obviously this is a cute dress by Collette Dinnigan and is perfectly appropriate for the AMA's, yet it is not the most amazing thing I have ever seen. BUT, and this is a big but, combined with her new 'do and smokey eye makeup, she certainly got my attention! I was so happy to finally see a more grown up, sophisticated Ms. Swift. Thank you for finally putting the curling iron down and officially joining the other side of Hollywood. Bye, bye country, hello hot!

And now for my special mention.... The product of Will and Jada Smith, Willow, is really one fantastic child. I saw her in an interview last week and I actually stopped everything I was doing to listen. She is cute, witty, funny, stylish and talented. It may sound like I am a bit obsessed with Willow, but it is really just sincere admiration for a kid who isn't even 10 years old yet. Now, with that said, I think this outfit is crazy. But, the fact that she even has the sense to pick out such editorial pieces and put it together this way forces me to give her props. She is reaching for fashion freedom and really expressing herself. I love that.

Oh my gosh. Really, what can I say that is not completely inappropriate on a blog about this look? Apparently Kesha put together this little number using VHS tape. I love a green artist and recycling is definitely cool, but seriously, where did you even find this much VHS tape to design this dress? Haven't these things been obsolete for a while? I guess not long enough because you found a way to wear a full dress made out of the material. Oy. Should mention the studded eyebrows? Um, better not.

As for this look, I think even Nicki Minaj is surprised she wore this on the red carpet. Just look at that face! What on earth is going on here??? I couldn't make this my number one worst dressed because that is just too easy. This rib cage inspired frock gets my "special mention" for craziest, most ridiculous, "look at me" dress on the carpet. And did she accidentally dip the bottom of her hair in green tie dye or is that simply a new version of hair mold? If her goal was to be visually stimulating, she definitely hit the mark. I stared at her for over 15 minutes trying to find something I liked about this and I am still lookin'......

Overall, the ladies did well and the performances were spot on. I love any excuse to talk about red carpet fashion, so props to everyone who walked the carpet and gave it their best try. I am sure someone would have something to say about my dress too if I ever make it to an official red carpet!

Hemline Heaven

Hemlines are a tricky thing. Just an inch too short or an inch too long can completely throw off the proportions of your body. This is why including tailoring in the price of your garment is a necessity. Do not think of it as the aggravating extra $20 on top of what you already paid, think of it as what makes you look like a million bucks. I cannot stress the importance of a perfect hemline!

Example number 1: Wearing pants that are too short will actually shorten and widen your legs. I have heard of a lot of fads in my day, but fattening one’s legs has never been one of them. There is certainly such a thing as ankle length pants, but there is a huge difference between pants that are too short and a “style”. Be sure you and your tailor know the difference.

On a positive note, if your flare and wider leg pants are hemmed just above the floor, you can look long and lean. This means that there should be a slight break in the front and they should be as long as possible in the back without dragging on the floor. Longer pants equal longer legs. Remember, you cannot hem a pair of pants for both flats and heels, you must pick one or the other. The only time this is even possibly an option is with kitten heels (very, very small) to flats. Otherwise, it is time to make a decision ladies!

With a skinnier leg, you cannot go as long because your foot becomes suffocated. The added bonus of this style is that you can see some of your shoes! Those things are expensive and deserve a chance to shine! For the hemline on these, you should go as long as possible before the pant leg begins to stretch. This usually means about half way down your foot. Show off your shoes!

With skirts, hemlines can often be one’s ultimate demise. Sounds scary, but with just one inch, the garment can swallow your entire body and help to lose its shape. For most women, the safest length is just above the knee. This works on all heights, shapes and sizes. It keeps the body in a classic hourglass shape. Appearances can be everything and an inappropriate hemline can immediately ruin your look. Just play in the mirror for a second by folding up a longer hemline and see how quickly your entire shape can change! It is the cheapest miracle in town.

This length is only possible on the lucky, few women who are very tall and very skinny. If you are not within this range, this hemline will instantly make you look dowdy and old. Looking like a nun has never really been chic and I don’t personally see the trend making its way to the forefront of fashion any time soon. Truthfully, even for the tall, skinny women of the world, unless the skirt is an extreme pencil style, it truly isn’t that flattering. My vote, stay away!

And finally, the mini. So scary and so fun at the same time! There is a bit of an age limit on short skirts and pushing your hemline too high can give you instant cougar status. Not something this stylist is aiming to do! If you are in shape, you can really rock this look until about 35. Adding opaque tights and boots give it an even longer life because you are toning down your bottom half and covering up appropriately.

So, no matter who you are, where you live or what you do, find a fabulous tailor. One of my favorite taglines (yes, I have them) is that a tailor is like a good (cheap) surgeon. He or she can instantly give your wardrobe a boost without ever setting foot into a store!

Top Ten Fall Shoe Styles

Fall is by far my favorite season. 100 degree weather has finally subsided, the air feels crisp and something about life just seems calmer. Although all of these things really do put a smile on my face, let's just be honest, fall fashion is one of my reason's for living. It may sound a bit extreme, but the excitement of being able to layer on fabulous new trends is sometimes almost too much for me to take! And then there are the shoes......

So, as discussed this morning on Martha Stewart's Sirius radio channel, here are my top ten picks for the best shoe trends for fall:

Back again, for an encore presentation, the over-the-knee boot. Love them. They are incredibly sexy without the "I am trying really hard" connotation. Surprisingly, they are pretty acceptable for most age groups. Of course, you have to be in fairly good shape to pull these off if you are over 45. In addition, as you become "more mature", you should delete the heel. It just becomes a bit too over the top.

This particular pair by Dolce Vita is a great option. The cut out behind the knee is a superb design allowing for the boot not to get crunched and caught. Also, remember that neutrals can be more then just black or brown. Taupe is a fabulously fantastic choice!

Apparently over-the-knee just wasn't enough for designers, so along came the thigh high. This really takes a special kind of lady to pull this shoe off. People always want to know if it is "age appropriate", well this boot really should be put back on the shelf after 35..... Sorry! It is the ultimate in sexy, men are going to love you, footwear. Realistic no, fabulous yes. Christian Louboutin knew what he was doing when he pushed the envelope with this $2,375 pair. Meow!

Up next, brogues. I nearly fell over myself at fashion week chasing down a girl wearing these YSL shoes. For $1000, you better love them, but does it get any better then studded, patent leather lace-up brogues? I don't think so:) This menswear inspired look began last spring, but has really blown up for fall. Look modern, fun and trendy buy adding these to any outfit.

Just this past Friday I was working with a client and got stopped in my tracks by these Libby Edelman shoes. Granny chic is so in right now! It is rare that I purchase something when working with a client, but she knows me well enough and my fashion conscious would not have allowed me to leave the store without them. They were priced at $49 (holy cow!) and I got an additional 30% off leaving them at $34. I am really good. Without the leopard print and studded toe, these shoes could be just as doubty as you remember on granny. Libby Edelman (of Sam and Libby ballet flat designers of the 80's) added this punchy material making them uber modern and super fun.

I LOVE LOVE these Kelsi Dagger boots for $200. Ankle booties will not be going anywhere for a while, so invest now. They can be a tricky shoe if you have bigger calves, so choose a lighter color if this is an issue for you. You are always looking to elongate your legs and wearing a darker color will do the opposite by cutting you off at the ankle. This pair is fabulous because it is classic and simple, but adds in a fantastic architectural toe. This is a big look for fall and instantly ups the glamor quotient of any ensemble.

Military is back! I have fond memories of my Doc Marten's from high school and apparently I am so old that they are back again. Sad for my psyche, happy for my feet! This studded pair by Free People is pricey at $388, but really fun and interesting. The studding is not too over-powering to the boot meaning that they can be worn with multiple looks. Sometimes, when a shoe is too overwhelming, it loses it's ability to be worn regularly. Be ready to rock these boots with everything from dresses to skinny jeans. This is a fairly young shoe and should be limited to a "Forever 21" type of crowd. The great thing about them though is that even if you are not an alternative rocker, you too can pull this boot off. Have fun and go out of your comfort zone!

Don't worry if you can't wear the studded military boot anymore, you have another high heeled option! By toning down the sharp utilitarian feel and adding a heel, these boots become instantly more sophisticated. They are so much more accessible to every age and style. Try pairing them with a simple ensemble such as jeans and a blazer to add some trend and edge to your look. If you are really feeling fun, a simple, straight style dress is a great combination as well. Push yourself to try something new! You won't break the bank in these Guess boots for $150.

Ahhhh, riding boots. I loved them 3 years ago, I love them today and I will love them 3 years from now. These babies aren't going anywhere and I am thankful for that! They are so chic, so fantastic, so rugged. I instantly feel like I should head out to the Hampton's for a polo match when I put them on. I don't know a thing about polo (other then hot men seem to play it), but I sure do know how to dress for a match. The great thing about riding boots though, is that you don't have to be going to a polo game to wear them! Rock them in the city, rock them in the suburbs, rock them in the country! Throw on leggings and a longer sweater and you are ready for a casual stroll in the park. You really just can't go wrong with these boots no matter your age, social status or style.

One of my personal favorites for fall shoe trends is the funky sneaker. Realistic for function, realistic for style. These PF Flyers are just above what I would pay at $130, but will really kick your outfit up a notch! I walk around NYC for a living, so comfort and style must go hand in hand. These two concepts do not have to live separately. I refuse to wear sneakers unless one of two things is going on: 1. My back is killing me. 2. I am going to the gym. This allows me to be happy and comfortable at the same time. Yea for dressy sneakers.

Rounding out my top ten for fall is the platform pump. Just when you thought they couldn't get heels any higher, they did. The great thing about this trend though, is that the higher you make the platform, the flatter your foot actually is. Your foot is not technically painfully arched because you have balanced out the heel with a toe platform. Finally, designers have caught onto the fact that pain should not equal fashion!!!! These Brian Atwood Maniac pumps for $575 have been all the rage for a while now and have spread what some would consider an epidemic of platform heels across the nation. I am just happy it is an epidemic I can handle:)

So ladies, even if you purchase just one new pair of shoes this fall season make sure you will love them, cherish them and most of all, wear them. Enjoy!

Those Who Can, Teach

Business has been tough for the dressmaker Kathlin Argiro during the recession, as it has for virtually every small business on Seventh Avenue. Seeing other designers close their doors, she was determined to save her studio by whatever means she could dream up.

“Out of necessity comes creativity,” Ms. Argiro said last week, speaking over the din of a half-dozen teenagers who were sprawled on her floor, cutting pages out of magazines. For four days, she set aside her design work for a venture that taps into the career aspirations of the “Project Runway” generation, basically a stylish boot camp, called Fashionista Prep. For $495, students learn the ropes of design, public relations and styling from Ms. Argiro and her colleagues.

“Purple shoes, I think, might be a bit too much,” Amy Salinger, a professional stylist, instructed Lizzie Borowiec, 15, from Summit, N.J., who had paired a J. Crew navy blazer with a lace dress, two intertwined belts, a pearl necklace on a satin ribbon and fingerless lace gloves, for a good-girl-gone-bad assignment. The outfit was Rachel Zoe worthy, but missing something. “Pointed toe makes it sexy,” Ms. Salinger said. “Round toe makes it sweet and innocent.”

In another corner was Maggie Hemphill, a precocious 14-year-old from Scranton, Pa., who, while in the sixth grade, started her own magazine, called Maggie-Zine. When she was littler, as in 3, she wanted to be a designer. But her career focus has since shifted into editing and styling; and, as a result of her training, she now thinks, “I kind of want to own a publication company so I can work with a number of different magazines.”

Feeding into the interest in fashion careers, LIM College hosted a seminar for teenagers this month, Teen Vogue has its Fashionista University and other summer fashion camps have popped up around the country. Ms. Argiro said that she was somewhat frustrated to hear from potential investors who were more interested in her instructional business than her dress line.

“Everybody wants to get into fashion,” she said. “God help them.”

"Ms. Salinger" Teaches Styling to Teens!

It is hard to imagine that I am double the age of my fashion students from Fashionista Prep. Take this picture for example: I pride myself on the fact that it takes a moment to figure out who the 31 year old is. Add in the blue bow on my head and it becomes a "Where's Waldo" of age. I love this, thrive on it and refuse to believe that you found me right away:)

All that aside, I am 31 and am twice the age of these lovely gals which means I do have the experience to teach them all about the styling world. For 4 days last week, I took 7 lovely young ladies under my wing and taught them the in's and out's of fashion styling. From personal styling to photo shoot styling, each and every one of them showed off their creative skills. I was overwhelmingly impressed with each of their innate abilities to style fabulously! I can tell you this, at 15 years old my style was non-existent. I believed I knew what I was doing, but until around 23, I really had no idea. I look back at pictures with my Doc Marten boots and Abercrombie sweaters and just ask myself, "Why!?!".

So any good styling class is going to have to be hands on. I remember sitting in lecture halls in college thinking, "Who the hell is really paying attention to this overhead slide and monotone teacher?". Well, certainly not me. I believe in bringing students into the mix and actually getting their hands dirty!

One of the challenges for the class was to create a "fashion closet" for the girls to style from. What better way then to have them each bring in their own favorite pieces and borrow a few from their sister or mom. Of course I brought in a ton too. With jewelry, shoes, belts, bags and clothing, we were ready to go!

Before we could dive into the styling, I wanted each of the girls to create an inspiration board for their "photoshoot". Arts and crafts never gets old! Everyone brought in their favorite fashion magazines and began to chop. I directed each of them to not only cut out fabulous outfits that would match their concept, but also to choose a model with the right look for their shoot. They were to create full concepts from clothing to models to set design.

The best part about this little project is that style writer Eric Wilson from the NY Times was there to watch the whole thing so he could write a story. Check him out in the mirror!

And now for the finale! I encouraged the girls to be creative and think outside of the box when creating their outfits. We were not specifically pulling clothing with a concept in mind when we created our "fashion closet", so we had to work with what we had. Luckily, in addition to bringing in our personal wardrobes, the class was held at Kathlin Argiro's design studio so we had tons of couture pieces to choose from!

Jacklyn and Catherine decided to go with an "Alice in Wonderland" theme. They created a gown utilizing different loose pieces in the showroom. As opposed to many shoots where there would be a bevy of gowns to choose from, they had to be super crafty and create their look from what we had. In styling, a lot of times things are technically one thing, but are used as another. Just like the scarf they used to create a skirt, not a usual place for such a thing, but it works!

Overall, the class was a smashing success! Each of the girls individually thanked me for taking them into the world of styling and showing them what it is all about. It is crazy, it is fun, it is often times overwhelming. But, at the end of the day, you are being creative, doing what you love and playing dress up for a living!!!!

10 Tips for Getting Ready for Your Stylist - Advice from a Fashion-Phoebe

The day I came to grips with the idea that a regular person like me needed a stylist was in the mountains of Vermont after a day of skiing with some long-time friends. I shared how frustrated I was to have closets bursting full of clothes but had tremendous difficulty finding something I wanted to wear. It was at that time that I realized that though I was a 40-something with dreams of making the world a better place, I was still wearing my 20-something and 30-something clothes much of which was purchased when (and even before) we all first met. I needed an update that conveyed I was a professional to be taken seriously. So, on the advice of a few of my highly successful, and fashionable, friends I hired Amy Salinger a stylist.

I admit, at first, this seemed a little crazy for someone like me. Unlike my big business and high-fashion New York City friends, I work in education. Like others drawn to the field I love the work/life balance the career provides and have an active and fun lifestyle that has never been much focused on what I wear. As a teacher the dress code is pretty lax and in my free time I ski, snowboard, play beach volleyball, football, and dance. I hadn’t given too much thought to my appearance. But when my friend who's also a career advice writer and speaker Penelope Trunk first posed the idea and the two-year president of the National Association of Womens' Business Owners Melanie McEvoy and high-profile photographer Amy Fletcher resoundingly supported this idea, I had to rethink my position.

I am now in my forties and as a professional educational administrator who loves speaking to individuals, small groups and large audiences about ways to educate innovatively, I knew it was important that I presented myself well because my message would be received more effectively if I looked on the outside like the experienced and stylish professional that was on the inside.

So, I hired a stylist and learned a lot about doing so, which I’m sharing here for others who are interested in doing the same.

10 TIPS TO GET READY FOR YOUR STYLIST

1) Weed your closet.
You don't want to spend valuable time with your stylist doing things you can do yourself. Throw out anything you haven't worn in two years. Throw out anything you'll never really get fixed. Put aside clothes you're thinking don't look quite right, but you’re not sure.

2) Get a friend.
This process is a lot easier with a friend to help. She or he can help you from the start to finish. They can push you to do the weeding and let go of the emotional connection and justification for keeping your clothing. They can help you determine what fashion areas of focus should be.

3) Think about real life events.
Think about real life events that you want help dressing for. Once you do that you can think of the fashion difficulties for which you really need support.
Here are some of my examples:

Going to a VIP party
I knew what suit I wanted to wear but had no idea what shoes were right, what shirt goes best, and what accessories might compliment the event.
Meeting a sophisticated friend for dinner
Yes, it's just dinner with a friend, but wearing my belly shirt and mood ring just doesn't look right anymore. What are the best jeans, shirt, shoes, and jewelry to have a casual, but grown up dinner.

4) Get in touch with your do's & don'ts

What are the fashion do's and don'ts about which you are wondering. Be prepared to ask. For instance I was wondering:
Is it wrong to safety pin a fallen button on my suit?
When wearing a sweater should it be open, buttoned, or partially buttoned?
How's my underwear?

5) What goes with this? And…Does this go with that?

You have those great pair of shoes, or that amazing skirt sitting in your closet. You love them! But what do you wear them with??? Have all those pieces pulled out specifically so your stylist can help you make an outfit with them.
You have your favorite outfits, but are you really putting them together as well as possible? This is where the stylist comes in. Be ready to try them on, or have pictures in advance, and find out how your outfits go together best.

6) Know your idiosyncrasies
Before you send your stylist off to shop for you, remember to tell her about your idiosyncrasies. While they may be obvious to you, they may not be to others. Pointing these characteristics out will result in your stylist getting you clothes you LOVE! Here were some of mine.

I don't iron so stick with wrinkle free.
I am messy. Don't give me light colored clothes that I will stain.
I'm petite and like to wear mid-high shoes

7) Don't whine. Get wine
When your stylist comes to help you sort through your clothes and then try on outfits it is wonderful, but it does get a little tedious. Make sure you have a bottle of wine and turn it into a party. Just don't spill!

8) Have safety pins and a sewing kit on hand
When your stylist comes with all your fabulous clothes some of them may need minor adjustments and she’ll know exactly what looks best. Make sure you have safety pins and a sewing kit on hand so those small alterations can be adjusted so they look just right.

9) Get stuff altered
If you’re like me, the idea of getting stuff altered is not appealing. Well, get over it. You paid someone to find great clothes for you and there will probably be a few things that need altering. If you followed the step above, she’ll help you get it ready so all you have to do is drop it off at the cleaners.

10) Lights, Camera, Action
Take picture of yourself in your new outfits so you can remember what goes with what. You may want to get dolled up so your friends who want to look at the pictures can see you at your best.

In the end, the days of having a closet full of "nothing to wear" have become a thing of the past. Instead, I wake up each day knowing exactly what to wear, and when I forget, I can always refer to the pictures she took of me to help me remember, like the ones below.

College to the Boardroom: Dressing Appropriately

So, the party is over. College is ending and it is time for the "real world". Stop crying! It can be fun, I swear.

First challenge, transitioning seamlessly into the work world by looking the part. This is often times not an easy task for those who have never set foot in an office. You own the staple uniform of jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirts for daytime and black pants with sexy, little tops for nighttime... Now what?? Basically you have a closet full of "weekend wear". Get out your parents credit card (you don't have any money yet, you haven't started working) and get ready to shop.

I LOVE this look from J Crew and I think it is a great middle ground for someone just entering the work force. Let's be honest, you can't really afford to buy an entirely new wardrobe at this moment, so it is time to be creative. Owning pieces that are great for multiple occasions is the key to this great leap you are about to take.

Let's focus in on the details of why I think this is a great look for almost any working situation: First, you are put together, but you are not stuffy. Remember that you are 22 years old, look it. Be sophisticated, but don't try to age yourself by 20 years. The gig is up, everyone knows you just got out of college!

The top half of this outfit is so accessible that it could even be worn with jeans! Look, it really is just a fancy t-shirt and a colored cardigan. The print ups the ante of the tee (don't think Ed Hardy here!) and the color of the cardigan makes it a bit more youthful. The piece making the entire look so "office appropriate" is the pencil skirt. A necessity in any woman's closet of any age and almost any shape, this garment will kick it up a notch at the workplace. Plus, it is a great foundation piece and can be worn multiple times without your co-workers calling you out. Topped off with a complimentary red colored flat to offset the yellow cardigan and paired with funky bracelets, this outfit has full on green light approval! Mix and match any of the items shown here for looks ranging from casual to work. You can do it!

Another great item is the wrap dress. It is basic, simple, straight forward and can be accessorized how ever you like! This means that you have the power to exercise your styling muscle.... Within means! This is another garment that will stand the test of time, just like the pencil skirt. It has the flexibility to be worn in a sophisticated way or a playful way. You are in control. Adding a fun shoe, as this Banana Republic ensemble is showing, gives it that younger edge that you are going for. No need to be stuffy just because you are out of college. Fun and appropriate are the key words class.

Summer Straw Hats

Someone save Kim! Her hat is going to swallow her! Seriously, this is a little ridiculous. How does one maneuver doors in this hat? What you don't know about this picture is that Kim Cattrall has a personal handler just for her hat and it was placed directly on her once she sat down. It will promptly be removed once she decides to move again...... I am just kidding for those that don't get my sarcastic humor.

So what is realistic when it comes to summer straw hats? What is too big? I personally have one simple rule, if you can't see anybody around you, the hat is probably too big. Of course this may be a plus for certain people trying to avoid others.... It should be just wide enough to cover your face so the sun can't get to it. Sorry ladies, you are just going to have to slather sun screen on your shoulders because if the hat is that wide, you probably will need a hat handler as well.

Now here is another problem. Wide brim straw hats should, I repeat, should only be worn to warm weather events surrounding a body of water. You are very within your means at a pool party, BBQ on the lake or cruising around in a sailboat, but the red carpet sponsored by Zales? Really? Really?!? Bethany Frankel, I am one of your bigger fans (I love loud mouths like myself), but this hat is only part of your offense. I cannot go without mentioning that this entire outfit is nuts. Add in the lollipop to boot and I just can't take it. The ruffle, the sash, the hat, the feather, the lollipop, I am going to burst! Take that hat, rip off the feather and throw on a bikini, done. Oh yea, and get off the red carpet and head directly to the beach......

So here we have a good option for most gals.... It is breathable (so your head won't be drenched in sweat), it is a good circumference and it has some style. Look at how awesome this model looks in her wide brim summer straw hat! This piece instantly adds class and style to any water-bound ensemble. Don't you see yourself on the high seas near the French Riviera? Boat and hot captain not included.

I truly believe it is a necessity these days to own some type of wide brim hat to block yourself from harmful UV rays. Yes, I am a doctor as well as a stylist. Truthfully, when you can own something that does double duty, style and protection, why not? I love something that is two for the price of one.

Flea Market Finds: How to be a Master!

I take great pride in the fact that I am a self-taught genius of flea markets. This essentially means that I am capable of finding fabulous treasures among what looks like piles of trash. People are easily overwhelmed by situations like this, but I thrive on it. It is a talent that has been honed over many years, but I want to give you, my fashion audience, some quick tips about how to "find the fab".

Take this dress to the left. It was on a sad little hanger in the back of a parking lot flea market looking tired and bored. That is until I found her and breathed new life back into her body! I was just strolling past this particular flea market, as it usually goes in NYC, and I decided to do a walk through. Nothing too crazy, I just wanted to take a glimpse. I usually only go toward jewelry and bags in these situations because they are the easiest to search through, but for some reason, I decided to look at a rack of vintage dresses. The word vintage can be deceiving. People think of celebrities wearing vintage gowns on the red carpet, but mostly it just means that things are old! And so was the story with this long, wine colored polyester gown from the 70's. Right there in the parking lot I tried this baby on over my clothing to see if it even remotely fit. And lo and behold, my eye was right on. It was a little long and a little loose, but for $25, it was sold. Of course the fun part of this story is that I then had to have it tailored for $96. The key to this type of shopping is knowing that often times, tailoring is a part of the price. I still got a floor length gown that I have worn numerous time for $130. Not too bad.

Another one of my great finds is this snake skin bag. Sure she's a little beat up, but she just keeps on ticking! Whenever I pair this bag with an outfit, I receive a compliment. It is over-sized and relaxed, creating a laid back vintage look every time I rock it. For $12 in Chicago, this snakeskin bag has been put to good use. At any retail store a new bag just like this one would be upwards of $200 to $250.

Just this weekend I found this amazing art deco bracelet at my favorite flea market in Hell's Kitchen. I am in way too many weddings this summer and I am trying to save money by styling two dresses different ways. This way I feel like I am wearing different outfits, but not buying completely new ensembles. This is totally for my own benefit since I will literally not be seeing the same people at any of the seven weddings I am attending. Yes, I said seven.

This little bauble only cost me $28 and was worth every penny. The detail and quality of it are amazing. To me, it also adds a bit of character to my look knowing that every piece of jewelry I am wearing I searched for and found a fabulous deal on! I will, of course, let everyone at every wedding know this and how much I paid for each piece. I can't help myself.

So here are a few quick tips to navigating a crazy flea market:

PATIENCE IS KEY: You are never going to find anything if you are rushing through the market. You have to accept the fact that this is an activity and enjoy the search. Sifting might take time, but it will totally be worth it if you find your next favorite piece.

DON'T GO WITH ONE THING IN MIND: You are never going to find exactly what you are looking for. Certain pieces are more plentiful then others, i.e. vintage jewelry, but this place is NOT merchandised for your pleasure. Go with the idea that you might find something fabulous.... Whatever it may be!

GO FOR QUALITY: There is a lot of junk at flea markets. Piles and piles of it. At some flea markets, that is all there is. Be discerning. If it is clothing, look at the stitching and stain possibility. Check for missing buttons. If it is jewelry, look for tarnishing and broken clasps. It may look cute, but if it is inexpensive crap, then you will look like inexpensive crap when you wear it:)

ACCESSORIES ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND: This is going to be the easiest thing to pick up. There is always a ton of bags and jewelry at any flea market. If you are looking for a trinket to get you through your shopping lull, then this is the place for you. Again, patience is key and only buy it if you love it.

CIRCLE AROUND ONCE BEFORE PURCHASING: Look at everything and make a short list of what you love. Go with a certain amount of cash and when you run out, it is time to leave. Most vendors only take cash so this is an easy way to stay on budget! Make wise choices and you will always love what you buy.

I’ve always believed I could make the world a better place. My dad thought I was dreamer; my mom preferred I go into business. Despite this, I followed my passion and started working as a teacher more than a decade ago. The work was great and I began making a difference in my school. Next I began working on programs that helped many schools. Today I work on programs that receive city, state, national and international attention and I have the pleasure of sharing some of the ideas about which I am most passionate on my blog, in magazine and newspaper articles, and by speaking to others interested in teaching and learning.

The problem was that while I was acting the part, I was having a hard time dressing the part. Sure, I looked okay, but it didn't come naturally. Fashion isn't really my forte and I HATE shopping. As a result, while I have a full wardrobe of clothes, many are left over from when I was in my 20s. Now I am a professional in my 40s and I need to look the part. Don’t get me wrong, like most of us who get up and go to work each day, I can certainly put on a suit and a few accessories, but I don’t look entirely put together. There’s usually something slightly off… wrong bag, shoes, shirt, necklace, scarf, earrings.

As an educator I know that some people have talents and passions in particular areas and they have the ability and motivation to be successful in those areas. Then there are others that certainly want to be talented in a particular area but they don't have the passion, interest, or talent, and for them we give extra help. The later described me when it comes to fashion. I wanted to look a certain way but it really wasn't an interest, passion, talent, or something I enjoyed or studied. Stores frighten me. The crowds, all the clothes, figuring out what is a good deal or what will look good and the dreaded dressing room and trying on all the clothes. I have no interest in fashion shows or magazines, and in general I've never developed a keen sense of what goes with what or what was in style. Additionally, I have a hard time getting rid of clothes (I get emotionally attached), so my closet tends to be overstuffed with items I can no longer wear or that are not appropriate for a 40-something professional woman. And quite frankly, I really just don't know what looks best on me.

I needed a fashion education, because as I learned from experts like The Brazen Careerist if you are pulled together and look great you'll feel better about yourself which boosts your confidence and helps others feel better about you as well. I decided I needed a professional who could teach and guide me when it comes to letting me know what goes best with what and who could help me understand my personal style. So, I hired Amy Salinger, fashion stylist (www.amysalinger.net), and I couldn't be happier.

Here's what she did for me...

1 - Closet Cleaning:
While, this is a service the stylist can provide, (and you don't even need to be present!), being a bit of the pack rat that I am, I tried to save a few bucks and take on most of this myself with the support of a friend. By the time Amy arrived I had already tossed five bags of clothes. I needed about an hour more time of her time to help with the things I wasn't sure about, as well as help to go through the clothes I loved, but no one else did. At that point, the focus is to organize, sort and clean out the rest. In the end, although I had donated seven bags of clothes, I felt like I had even more clothes, because I could see what I had and it was organized.

2- Closet consultation:
The real point of this is to see exactly what you own and how to evolve it. The aim is not to throw out everything in your wardrobe. The stylist takes a look to see what can be saved, what can be tailored and how to up the current style value of your wardrobe. It is also to organize it so you can actually see what you own and actually wear it all! She organizes it in a way to help you with styling so your brain doesn't hurt when you are trying to get dressed:) 3 piles are made, "salvation army", "maybe keep" and the "tailoring" pile. In addition, she will create a "fill in the holes" shopping list during the consultation. She will discuss a shopping budget with you once your exact needs have been determined. This lasts about three hours and in the end you will be able to utilize what you own and be ready to buy exactly what you need.

3 - Shopping:
I have very little time or interest in shopping, so here is what my stylist did. She bought the bulk of my list at Loehman's which has designer clothes at a discounted price. She also gets an additional 15% off there as well which she passes along to the customer. She brings these items directly to her customer. No shopping, no hassle, no need to be present...unless, of course, unlike me, you have the time and interest. Then you can join her on the shopping journey. The best part is she discusses a realistic budget with you beforehand so you know exactly what to expect!

4 - Styling:
This is the final portion and lasts about 3 hours. As fast as you can change is as fast as she will work! During this time she will combine the new items with your existing wardrobe and photograph each look. You will not put on a completely new outfit every time. Rather you may switch out the top half a few times and then the bottom half a few times or just change up the accessories. This enables you to discover multiple ways to wear everything you own and make the most of your wardrobe! When she is done, you will have about 30-40 looks from which to choose. This portion is also designed to provide a learning lesson so you will actually have the knowledge to create many more looks by yourself because you will own the right pieces!

Time to look the part.
Following our time together I had a V.I.P. party where I was networking with others sharing ideas about how businesses could support our students. I had on the right sling back shoes, broach, suit, lacy shirt, and bag. It all came together. Following that I spoke on a panel to business people about the importance of social media in education and not only did I feel the part, I felt I looked the part. You can see for yourself in this video.

Am I an overnight expert? No. but that's where technology comes in. Amy Salinger took pictures of me with all sorts of different outfits to remind me of what goes with what and what to wear and when. Now I get up in the morning, t. Think about what kind of day it's going to be, go to the collection of pictures sorted by clothing style i.e. formal, business, business casual, casual-are there more?, and pull it together.

Now I look on the outside the way I feel on the inside. Confident, excited, powerful, and ready to work with others who want to help make the world a better place with and for our children.

HOT Summer Work Looks: Own the Right Pieces

Just because the temperature is up doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style! Let's face it, according to me, unless you are traveling through the insect infested backwoods of the country, you should never sacrifice style. Come down on me summer heat, I will fight back and do it in fashion.

The key to fighting this insane heat that is about to descend upon us is to layer on, layer off. Going to the office is much different then being IN the office. Why do they always put the thermometer at a lovely 50 degrees when it is pushing 100 outside??? Apparently the person paying the bill is not setting the temperature.....

Just as this look from J Crew is showing you, the most important thing in summertime is to look like you weren't trying too hard. It should be easy and breezy, just as your summer attitude is! Nothing too structured, nothing too overwhelming, the layers should almost always be able to go from daytime to nighttime. This lovely variable gives your summer wardrobe a lot more flexibility then any other season. Materials are light and breathable, meaning that any sort of lining might be stifling. Only suits should really present the possibility of having 2 layers to contend with.

The sheath dress is a fabulous option to play with during the next couple of months. You can easily layer items on during the warmer months and utilize it later in the year by layering under! I love versatility. A neutral color, such as this tan, allows you to truly play with it as a foundation piece and change it up completely depending on what you put with it. Change the belt, necklace, shoes, layering piece and bam, it is an entirely different outfit. The style works on most body types from straight to curvy, it really just depends on how you style it. Make it works ladies!

If you work at a location that requires you to wear a suit, don't fret. I can style you fabulous no matter what! Again, the most important factor is to keep it looking like you didn't try too hard. I know, I know, "How do I do that with a suit???" Easy. It is all about how you "wear" the suit and style it. Rolling up the sleeves is key. This automatically gives it a more laid back feeling. It becomes a bit more accessible rather then stiff and uninviting. Adding a blouse that is colorful and printed will help to brighten the overall look. Keeping the material loose and the shirt un-tucked may seem inappropriate, but remember ladies, you are wearing it under a suit! You are already so put together that wearing the undergarment in a more casual way will NOT throw off the entire ensemble. No one in the office will be staring you down for your inappropriate attire!

The final touch on any FAB ensemble is the jewelry! It is easy to buy, easy to style and a fairly inexpensive way to pump up any look, any season. For summer I always promote colorful stones. It pushes whatever outfit you have created into the playful, summer outfit you aspire to create! From necklaces to bracelets to earrings, adding a fun summer bauble is the final touch that your amazing outfit needs! Remember ladies, don't overdo it. A fantastic look really only needs one pop piece. Choose one great item and make it shine! Then, your whole outfit will be like a ray of sunshine.............

Summer Shorts CAN Work For You!

You have no idea how many people are horrified by the idea of wearing shorts in the summertime. I am here to tell you that (for most people) there is a style that can be flattering! You WILL feel stylish and sexy when you leave the house.... I wouldn't let you leave if you didn't!

Almost every designer showed some version of a summer short during fashion week. Trust me folks, this is a trend that isn't going anywhere. Let's face it, the heat will not allow it. Function and fashion go hand in hand and when something fits the concept so perfectly, you better open your mind, because it is here to stay.

Now, let's talk styles and options:

The short short: First thing that comes to mind for most ladies, ug. I get it, unless you have perfectly toned thighs, this style is petrifying. That is why it is an option and you don't HAVE to own them. Truthfully, I hate throwing out rules, but if you are over 35, this might be past your prime. I am 31 and I love them, but it appears to be countdown time to the end.....

Pop quiz: Which one of these shorts is too short even for the most in shape person? Um, if you don't know the answer I am scared. The orange shorts from J Crew are a perfect option for anyone that is looking for a fun and flirty bottom half. The silk material allows it to go from casual to dressy just by adding the right jewelry, bag and high heel shoes.

Now although this model clearly has the upper hand based on the fact that her legs are a mile long, don't let that deter you from choosing the same style of shorts! This mid-thigh option is a perfect choice for most women. Because of the slight pleating, there is room for movement and comfort, yet it is not adding on the pounds. Pleating can often be a gal's worst enemy, but this easy draping is masking flaws rather then adding them. In addition, the tie string draws the eye to the the middle and gives the shorts a bit more of a stylized look. Legs of all shapes and sizes can be happy in these shorts by Aqua at Bloomingdales!

Now if you are seriously still not convinced that shorts are your thing, let's try out one more style you might be comfortable with. The Bermuda short is great for a little more coverage, but still rocking the shorts look. They should be straight and be form fitting. A flat front is going to be the best option for a long short, otherwise you are going to be swimming in fabric and it will not look good! If you are extremely wide through the thighs then this is not you pair, but even if you have curves you don't extremely love, you have to make sure these skim the body. Otherwise, your sexy curves will turn to, well, fat. You get the idea!

So there it is folks. Three basic styles that should fit most women. Options are key and finding a pair that suits your body and lifestyle is the most important way to feeling and looking great!

Carmelita Couture: My Fav Funky Designer

I was truly lucky when I found this designer. Carmelita Couture has the funkiest, quirkiest, sexiest design aesthetic I have seen in a long time. The best part about her clothing? The fact that you can rock out a bit without leaving your comfort zone.

Fashion week was not only about the actual runway shows themselves, but about the people attending that were walking their own personal runways. Of course I had to not only be included in this "real person" fashion show, I had to be the best:) To be the best, you have to borrow clothing from the best. I utilized my stylist hat to pull every single outfit I wore. Everyone that I met thought it was hysterical that I was a one woman walking store. Everything I had on was for sale and my big mouth was going to let everyone know!

Carmelita was kind enough to ship a few fabulous frocks to me overnight because I was running out of options! I knew wearing one of her creations would definitely make me stand out (in a good way!). The last day of fashion week I decided to push the envelope (for my comfort zone) a little bit. Now, no one ever said that I wasn't partial to a jumper, but wearing one in fuchsia and red was a bit of a leap for me. My roommate let me know when I tried it on at home that I looked like a very stylish character in Austin Powers. I said thank you and started making decisions about how to do my hair and makeup.... The greatest compliment I got was that I could have been in a fashion show circus. And guess what? I was already under the big tent and this is the biggest fashion show on earth so I felt I hit the nail on the head!!! Go me and go Carmelita. How perfectly did this jumper fit me? It was crazy because it could have been so wrong and yet it was SO right! Love it. Let's not forget to give a quick shout out to my handsome friend, editor and owner of TheFashionWalk.com, Keeniun.

And here we have my "sexy secretary with a funky fashion week twist" look. I like to get very specific when I am creating fabulous ensembles! Working 12 hour days interviewing people was hard enough, but preparing for my head to toe overhaul might have been harder! It usually takes me about 45 minutes to an hour to get ready on a normal day. I was giving myself at least an hour and a half during fashion week. I was my own fashion stylist, hair person and makeup person. For those of you not in the industry, it is VERY difficult to be camera ready for 12 hours when you are the one doing everything! When asked what was the most difficult part about fashion week, that was always my answer. It sounds crazy, but it is very tiring to constantly make sure your hair is in place, you are not shiny and your lipstick is properly applied. I am working on my entourage so I can stop complaining about this. Oh, the difficulties of my job:) Please see the ridiculousness of this statement.....

More NYC Fashion Week!

So it is the last day and I am very happy and very sad at the same time. I don't think I could handle another day, but it is truly one of the most fabulous weeks I have ever had! I have seen and interviewed more amazing people than I ever have in my life. It really seems like everybody has some fabulous job that I stand next to. Yesterday I met the director of design from Spanx and I went crazy. The other day I sat next to the fashion editor for In Style Mexico. It is the most networking I have ever done in my life. I have a stack of cards to get through once all of this madness is over....

NYC Fashion Week

I have been SO busy this past 6 days with NYC fashion week, that I haven't even had time to breath. Luckily I got the afternoon off so I can show you everything that has been going on! I am working with www.TheFashionWalk.com interviewing everyone and anyone from designers to celebrities at all the shows. I have been working 8 to 12 hours a day to bring you the best and most amazing footage from the most important week in NYC fashion. Pictures below, videos to come!

"Bonnie and Clyde" Photoshoot for TheFashionWalk.com

As you all may know by now, I have been styling photo shoots galore lately (hence why I have been MIA, sorry!). Last week I was working with www.TheFashionWalk.com doing a menswear inspired shoot. There is a section called, "The Look of Now" and as the stylist, I decide what that is! I decided it was menswear inspired women's clothing:)

I decided to do a "Bonnie and Clyde" look since I had 2 models to work with. For all of the shots, one model was "Bonnie" and the other was "Clyde". I got two thumbs up from the team about the concept, so I figured I might know what I am doing:)

I was lucky enough to have access to some amazing menswear inspired clothing. The designers behind the line Eva Khurshid have created a very sophisticated and classic collection. It was the perfect fit for my idea. Everything is conservative with a twist. Perfect for the stylish woman who wants to remain super classy!

The truly key part of this particular line is that they create foundation pieces for your wardrobe that will be the best investment items ever! It can be styled quite simply (like the top pictures), or funked out (like my photo shoot pictures). It really just depends on your mood and style. Either way, these are the basic foundation items that I constantly push with clients no matter what their age, job, personality or background may be. They really will stand the test of time!!

Of course what is a photo shoot without a little bit of crazy? I always bring the crazy:) Fun that is! While the models are hard at work, I am the one in the background trying to make everyone laugh. Photo shoots can be long and tiring (yes, this actually is work people), so you have to keep the energy up. I decided to take a picture with the lovely and VERY tall model Snow (6' baby!). A stool was necessary if I wanted to be seen in the shot!

This is the finale shot with the entire team. That lovely gentleman to my left is Keeniun, the founder and owner of the magazine. Shout out Keeniun. We are working together for the upcoming fashion week at Bryant Park, so be ready for lots of backstage access! I am going to be interviewing designers and checking out ALL of the shows. Oh yea, how cool am I? Very cool:)

Bohemian Chic Fab Photo Shoot

It is so on. Oh yea, that's right, I am back in the photo shoot game. It is too much fun and my creative muscle is finally being flexed to it's max again! My muscles like to be flexed:) My last photo shoot has already been picked up for publishing which only eggs me on to do more and more and more.... It certainly helps that I have found an AMAZING team of people to work with. We seriously get it done. We did 10 looks yesterday and I still managed to return all of the clothing before the end of the day! For those of you that are not in "photo shoot world", this is completely unheard of. We work so well together that we not only produce incredible shots (of course this is our mutual opinion:), but we grind it out without missing a beat.

See for yourself.... Our model Shannon was nothing short of fantastic. Not only did she look good, but she was incredibly easy to work with and very happy. This is not always the case:) We went with a bohemian chic look choosing anything that the wind could pick up. This means lots of flowy materials, long hair extensions and unbelievable rocky jewels by Brittany Rawlings. Her stuff was out of this world and really was the icing on the cake of every look.

Next up, earthy chic mama from the 60's.... Shannon would have been the most stylish hippie around. The long white dress underneath is actually a prom dress if you can believe it. See how amazing styling can be!!!!

Obviously you know these are working pictures since there is a random hand in the shot! This was such a fun look because it was actually a one-piece bathing suit and long skirt put together! Everything was covered in colorful stones which really brought out the earthy quality of the shoot. What do you think?

I think this may have been a favorite for the group. It is SO not my style and that is why I was so proud of myself for how it turned out! I loved how laid back it easy and how many thing are going on in one look. It really shouldn't make sense, but somehow it all came together and that is what made it so perfect. This is bohemian chic at its best!!!

Um, swing in your loft? Yes, please. How cool is this??? Meagan Cignoli, the photographer, literally has a swing in her studio/loft. This makes for phenomenal photo shoot opportunities! Not to mention a whole lot of fun for the team when we are not working:) I was hanging out on that swing for most of the day because I love reverting back to a ten year old.

And to wrap it up, here is my favorite shot of the day!:) Shannon, post hair extensions, love it. Aminah, my fabulous assistant and myself. Of course I am the ass who decides to actually hang off of the swing. What else would I do? Just stand there???? Nope, not me. Hope you enjoyed the shoot!!!!

And Now for the Worst... Golden Globe Gowns 2010

Let me preface this post by letting you know that there really were no frocks that made me cringe and bite my lip. With that said, I was still "concerned" by a few of the gown choices.

First up, Julianne Moore's Balenciaga dress was way off... Where was the shape, the curve, the silhousette? Why would you diet and excercie frivilously and then choose this gown just so you can cover it up? At least she slightly saved the ensemble with a fab pair of earrings. It ALMOST (not really) made up for the bizarre neckline and unfortunate and unkept hair-do. I know it was raining, but don't you have a stylist following you around?

Next up is the hottest woman to hit television in a long time, Sophia Veranga. Unfortunately, she chose a Carolina Herrera dress that did absolutely nothing for her. The material was my first big issue because it looks like that of a high school prom dress from Jessica McClintock. Sorry to all those girls who love Jessica:( My second issue is that it was just way to much material for such a small lady. It was like she had another dress following her around all night.... She had every opportunity to show off her incredible sex appeal and beauty, but this dress did neither.

Oh Anna Paquin. This is a simple case of when a dress is incredible and the styling almost ruins the entire thing. Stella McCartney created a fabulous gown and Anna (or Anna's stylist) decided that a clunky pair of gladiator sandals was the appropriate shoe choice. This was NOT the appropriate shoe choice. It was way too much going on and a much too heavy choice for a shoe option. Plus, these shoes are meant for a summer look, not a red carpet.

Finally we have Tina Fey in Zac Posen. A good idea in theory, but this is WAY too much dress for such a small woman. Too much pattern, way too much length and too much "bow-y" shoes. All in all, too much! If it had one less tier on the bottom, it would have substantially helped her cause... Unfortunately, they decided to keep the tier. Sorry Tina, this just wasn't your best fashion choice..... You are still funny though:)

So that is it for my ranting and raving about the Golden Globe fashions. There was no total blunders, which made me smile. Obviously there will always be a few that are off, but what would an awards show be without that? Um, boring. I commend you all for trying to look your best and braving the scary waters of internet commentary. Good job.

The BEST Golden Globe Gowns 2010

Ah, awards season is here again! I LOVE this time of year. It is all about glitz and glamor and everything fabulous! Bring on the bling.

I know my first pick for "best dressed" at the Golden Globes is going to come with some criticism. My boyfriend has already chastised this choice. Drew Barrymore looked stunning in her Atlier Versace gown. The shoulder and hip detail bordered on that of a sea creature, but I still thought it was to die for. It was chic and elegant with a funky, individual twist. Nude is not always the best choice for the red carpet, it is easy to look washed out, but I really just loved the elegant detail on this dress. Her hair and make-up also perfectly complimented the simple sexiness of the overall look.

Next up for "best dressed" is January Jones. She always tries to do something just a little different and I truly appreciate that. Black is never one of my favorites on the carpet, it just doesn't read well on camera. That is why I was so drawn to this look, because it DID look different and interesting. Not an easy feat. I was thrown off by the hair ribbon at first, but it really grew on me. I think it added to the "chic" quotient by a million. She took a simply elegant black gown and made it her own. This Lanvin dress was nothing short of spectacular when styled correctly... which it was! Kudos to your hair and makeup team as well for extending the classic elegance throughout the entire look.

Now for some color! Diane Kruger hasdefinitely proven herself to be something of a fashion icon. She is almost always interesting and hits the nail on the head with her fashion choices. This Spring Christian Lacroix gown is fierce in every way possible. Look at that neckline for God's sake! How insanely fabulous is the construction of this dress. Keeping her hair off her neckline was also ingenious because that is the most busy part of her gown. You really don't want to mess with it in any way. Show it off!

I guess looking good is easy for her. It doesn't hurt that she is an amazingly stunning woman who can really pull off anything. Damn you Diane Kruger!

And now a double whammy of beauty and style, Christina Hendricks and Kate Hudson. Both were light and lovely on the red carpet. Kate wore a fabulous Marchesa gown, one of my absolute favorite designers for anything gown-related! Let's not forget to give her shoes a shout out. They seriously helped enhance the funk factor of this look. Christina rocked a Christian Siriano dress.. Oh yes, the winner of Project Runway. Can you believe it? He really is proving to be the most successful winner of them all! To get on the red carpet at the Golden Globes is huge. The fact that this dress was one of my favorites right from the start without even knowing it was Siriano's dress is even better. I love to root for the underdog and he is certainly still just making his way into this crazy world. Good for you Christian!

So there you have it. Feel free to criticize my choices for "best dressed", but remember, this is my blog and all about my opinions:) Overall, this was a great kick off to the awards season and I think everyone did a pretty good job at looking fabulous. Usually there is a safety factor involved in the Golden Globes because it is the first show of the season. I actually think people dove into their fashion choices this year and I commend that! Can't wait for more....

Ok, so as far as awesome nights go, yesterday was pretty up there. It was quintessentially NYC, in a way that only NYC can be. If you talk to any NYer, they will throw out the statement, "Only in New York" quite a bit. This just refers to how ridiculous things are always happening here and you should just learn to expect the unexpected....

Here is the run down: My BF Courtney asked if I would be interested in attending a party for the book launch of the costume designer from Gossip Girl, Eric Daman. The handsome fashionista that we are posing with (promoting his book very prominently, thanks Court). We contacted a mutual acquaintance who just happens to be the head of marketing for Henri Bendel's where the red carpet event was being held. Yes, we are that cool. It was invite only so she had to put us on a very special list. Again, so cool.

I put on a skirt that you have all seen before, but who cares, I look hot in it. Of course I always feel skinny until I get to these hoity toity fashion events. It is like you imagine. Everyone is rail thin and has on the most amazing ensembles. Of course there is always one or two crazies that really believes their outfit is the bomb, when really it is just an actual bomb.

Any slight insecurity (I just drink and pretend I am the hottest one there:) went away once I saw my friend from high school across the gigantic room. What are the chances? I attacked him, per my usual style, and gave him a huge hug. He is familiar with my crazy antics and I believe he truly appreciates them. His outfit was bananas (ode to Rachel Zoe). I was seriously impressed. Just check John out! When I asked what he was up to he let me know he works in the wardrobe department at Gossip Girl and is allowed to borrow whatever he wants. Um, come again? I think my jaw hit the floor. Not only did I run into my old friend, but he works in the wardrobe department at the hottest show on television and can borrow anything??? As I said, "Only in New York". I will be bothering him:)

So here comes some more crazy.... After I was done hounding my dear friend John, I realized there was T.V. camera's filming everywhere. Where they there for me? No, not quite. Apparently MTV's, "The City" was filming. Now I knew I must have been at the coolest party in town. This level of fabulous is not usually my life so I was sucking it in as much as possible (both literally and figuratively:).

Now, I am not a stalker (at least of celebrities), but once they were done filming God made it apparent that I was suppose to take a picture with Olivia Polmero. I was off in a corner looking at accessories and talking to Courtney when Olivia very quietly was also checking out the goodies. I jumped into stalker mode and asked if she would mind taking a picture with me. As loud as I am, this is truly out of character. I hate bothering people that constantly get hounded and being "that girl". So readers, this celebrity stalking was strictly for you to enjoy how ridiculous this party was. You want me to tell you she was a bitch. You are hoping for some juicy story. Well folks, I just can't give it to you! Not only did she graciously take a picture with me, but she offered to take another one if it didn't come out! What I will tell you is that I am a size 4 and I look like a heffer next to this girl. Refer to the picture if you don't believe me. Courtney would not stop talking about how Olivia's thigh was the size of her own arm.

And now for my sidebar shout out to a favorite outfit of mine from the night! This is Biz (short for Elizabeth, love it!) from the marketing department at Henri Bendel's. She was not only totally stylish, but she was lovely as well. You work that chic preppy look! Blair Waldorf would be soooooooooo jealous.

Here is my finale moment on the red carpet. Most people make their way down this paparazzi filled experience at the beginning of the party, but obviously I am NOT as cool as I previously thought... They were actually taking down the set as Courtney was taking this shot. Oh whatever! This is my first red carpet moment with many more to come...... Look for my big debut in the background of "The City". They even made me sign a waiver:)

Belstaff: The Original Coat for the Guy's Guy

Everybody's doing it. Brad Pitt did it in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". Will Smith saved the world in it. Hell, even guys hating middle age (yes, that's you John Travolta) have done it. And let's not forget our little Shia, he looked pretty cute doing it too. What is it that they are all doing? Trying on their guy's guy look by rocking a Belstaff coat. A very simple way for a man to get in touch with his rugged biker side.

Founded in 1924 in Staffordshire, England, Belstaff has remained the "it" coat for men who are looking to invest in a piece that really doesn't lose it's value. Not to mention that it seriously is pretty studly. I didn't learn about this little gem of a brand until my boyfriend threw his Belstaff on and I almost hit the floor. Now I must admit that he is pretty damn cute standing alone, but wearing his Belstaff did wonders for his "hot" quotient. I suggest all women promote their man buying anything that will make them look even hotter.

The original Belstaff gansta, or at least the first movie star to make it popular, was Steve McQueen. He would wear the very popular Trailmaster while biking. In 2007, Belstaff released a new and improved Trailmaster in honor of Steve Mcqueen. He must have really loved his Belstaff.

Why all of this talk about Belstaff? Well, I wish they were paying me, but that is hardly true. I was in J. Crew over the weekend and they are now selling Belstaff! I don't regularly walk into J. Crew (although I do like it), so I had no idea! As the price point of J. Crew goes up (thank you Michelle Obama for wearing it), so do the brands that they carry. Belstaff is definitely an investment with this particular coat being $795. But as I mentioned, it is definitely a worthy investment and does not lose it's value! It is meant to look rugged and worn in. The one my boyfriend has is actually waxed cotton, which means every 2 years he has to re-wax it for $50 and it looks brand new. Pause for sexual joke.

So invest boys and buy yourself some manliness.

I have been working with the lovely and talented Bee Kim for a little while now. She is the founder of The Wedding Bee blog which features everything and anything wedding related. Having conquered her own wedding, she has recently become a mother. These lovely shots are from a shoot she did during pregnancy (obviously!) in Central Park. I was lucky enough to help her out with the styling for the shoot. Knowing where she was shooting, I wanted it to be ethereal and colorful. Kind of "earth mama" like. I think the shots turned out pretty perfect if I do say so myself..... Take a look!

S & M Jewelry: Spike You!

Watch out boys! You better not step out of line, because us ladies now have more than just our big mouths to fight back!! We have spiked accessories.

I am loving this new trend. It is not only sexy and tough, but is is damn cool. I have always secretly been a fan of punk rock, but the only way that realistically looked good on me was a studded belt. A mohawk was just never in the cards.

Well now I have every option in the world to rock out with my spike out. I've got shoes, I've got headbands, I've got bracelets, I could go on and on and on.... But you already know that:)

If only Rhianna had been wearing her spike ring when Chris Brown decided to wig out, I think things would have gone very differently..... See what I mean about how important the spikes can be! They double as an amazing accessory as well as a weapon of destruction.

I mean seriously, look at this thing! I would probably hurt myself. Wearing this on a date basically says, "Stay at least ten feet away from me". So if you don't want a man (or woman), pick this ring as the jazz for your ensemble.

And what about this spiked wonder? It scares the crap out of me in the best possible way. It is fashionably fabulous. I mean, I am probably not wearing this to the grocery store (unless it is 24 hours and it is 3 in the morning), but as far as looking high fashion, this is an instant pick-me-up. And it helps out on a bad hair day. NO ONE is looking at your hair with this thing on.

So spikes it is for the new year. It may be a bit crazy for you, but try out something more simple, like a bracelet. I have a feeling you won't have trouble talking to anyone at the bar once they see your fantastic conversation piece.

Help Me Pick My New Headshot!!!!

I was lucky enough to work with Amy Fletcher last week and have some new headshots taken. Since I have had my "long hair" (I fully admit they are extensions) for a year now, I think it is about time! I walk into auditions and hand them a headshot with my chopped 'do and they always look thoroughly confused. Usually they have already seen my website and webseries and my hair is completely different in everything you look at! The greatest part is I am about to make my hair shoulder length after the new year.....:) As a final note, I know that some of these look very similar, but the differences are enough that I need your help!!!

Hanukah Party Fashion Show!

I love going to my friend's Michael and Red's annual Hanukah party. While everyone is busy throwing Christmas or holiday soirees, Michael and Red just go straight for Hanukah Harry and whip up some FABULOUS latkes (that is potato pancake for those of you that don't speak Hanukah).

In addition to knowing how to throw a lovely cocktail party, Michael and Red are also some of my most fantastically fashionable friends. This comes along with having other fantastically fashionable friends. All of this combined means that we ended up having a fashion show while we ate large quantities of latkes and drank champagne. As Adam Sandler says, "8 crazy nights!". Well, our fashion show Hanukah party was a good example.

For those of you that are unfamiliar, this is a latke. It is fried heaven. Literally you fry up shredded potatoes into yummy pancakes. Adding apple sauce or sour cream is the most traditional way to eat it. I added a side of lox (smoked salmon) just to make it extra Jewish:)

Michael and Red even went all out and had Pixie sticks and Dr. Brown's soda! This is a big deal to me. Pixie sticks are a happy memory from childhood and are not just hanging around at any old store. They had to search for these. I think it was worth the struggle. And Dr. Brown's is a staple of any Jewish deli. The funny part is you really cannot find this brand anywhere else. If you have never tried it, today is your lucky day because I am introducing it to you! Try the cream soda, you will just die.

Now back to the fashion show.... How much do you love this picture? This is Red's best photo shoot pose... I think she has a new career in her future:) This is the top of a vintage suit that she picked up. We all loved it so much because it reminded us of what was cool back when we had our respective bar/bat-mitzvah's. This is around 12 or 13 and represents you becoming an adult. So much Jewish knowledge for you today! The point is that all of us had our lovely bar and bat-mitzvah's in the early 90's and this is exactly what was cool. Lots of big puffy shoulders. Oy, you should see my crazy bat-mitzvah dress. The best part is that this is cool again. I love it.

I know I look kind of scary in this picture, but the sweater is to die for. Rachel started pulling out her Bubby's (grandma's) vintage clothing and we all went nuts. This is her cardigan with pink motif's. It is grandma chic.

This is Dom, one of our other fabulous friends. I was in love with her ruffled green dress and earthy necklace (a gift from Rachel). She topped it all off with her Chanel boots and brown tights. Who knew earthy chic could work so well at a Hanukah party?!?

The finale of the night's fashion show was this awesome holiday sweater. She was suppose to be going to an "Ugly Christmas sweater" party following our Hanukah party, but the recession proof side of her would not actually buy an ugly sweater. Instead, she purchased a cute vintage sweater at a thrift store and added her own version of ugly. Jingle bells strategically placed on her nipples. Classic.

Overall, Michael and Red's Hanukah party fashion show was a smashing success! I always knew I looked forward to this time of year for a reason.....

Fur: A Faux Pas or Just Awesome!

This is awesome. Is this chick serious? Seriously foxy. Get it, get it... Foxy!!! I am so funny. Alright, enough "adult" humor (as in cheesy), let's get down to business. This is insane and I am not quite sure what set of eyes to look at. Even if you live in Alaska this is not cool. I mean, it is cold, but you do not need to actually WEAR the animal! No matter whether you love or hate fur, we should ALL hate this.

In actuality, I do love fur. Sorry PETA. I know it is wrong and mean, but it looks so damn good and feels so damn warm! Why be good when being bad literally feels so great! There are levels of fur that are unacceptable (example at left), but using fur as an accessory is perfectly acceptable and looks very stylish. Think hats, scarves, earmuffs... You get the idea.

All of these girls are doing it, so why not become part of the "cool" crowd? I can hear PETA tearing me a new one right now.... I am half kidding, save the animals! Or wear them stylishly.... Your choice:) I do love this ode to Russian chic with a big fur hat. Clearly you have to be very secure in your style to pull off something like this. Either you rock this in the backwoods because you are so freakin' cold it doesn't matter what you wear or you pair it with a very chic and fashionable outfit and look like you just walked off a runway. Again, your choice. I am not making judgments here:) (Yea, right).

You could also be the girl next door who just wants a little spice for her winter look. Choose earmuffs, they are fun and you are not draping yourself in animal. Look at how happy this model is in her fun fur earmuffs and wrap scarf? You too can be this happy:)

Then, of course, there is always up-town chic... Never to be messed with! Fur can simply be the most fabulous thing on the planet when done right! The stylist's over at Harper's Bazzar proved this perfectly with these completely expensive ensembles topped off with Jackie O inspired fab. I want to be them. Ok, maybe just for an afternoon... All of that sophistication and class would mess with my crazy and loud personality. The cracks would start to show very quickly... You can dress up the girl, but you can't take her out... for long:)

Dana-Maxx Charity Event

Yesterday evening I did my mitzvah (good deed) for the holiday season. I worked, as a fabulous stylist, at a charity event benefiting the Women's Funding Network. See, I am not only a fashionable young lady, but I am going to heaven for my good work as well:) These are definitely two positives I have working for me, we will discuss my negatives at another time....

Along with several other fashionable stylists, I was there to chat it up with attendees and make sure they picked the right pieces from the Dana-Maxx collection. If you were about to question the name tags, that last sentence should have answered you:) Dana-Maxx (yes, that is her real name. Awesome.) is the designer who hosted the event. Decked out in a blue dress of her own design, she too is going to heaven for her good deeds and fashionable choices. We are taking a mini-van together and inviting all other fashionable and charitable ladies to join:)

So back to the event, there was a team of hair and make-up people making each and every model fabulous. Don't they look fabulous?:) For the first half of the event, the models were walking amongst the guests showing off the Dana-Maxx collection. Next up was a runway show with her holiday pieces.

The lovely hostesses of the party, Jordan and Megan from Non-Society.com, were as comfortable on a microphone as I am! That is saying a lot... The girls MC'ed the fashion show and showed off different Dana-Maxx looks. They had double duty as models and hostesses!

All in all it was a fun evening and we helped to raise money for a good cause. Come one, come all and join me in my stylish mini-van up to heaven...

Winter Warm without the Bulk!

I received a great question yesterday, how do you look hot in the winter without emulating the state puff marshmallow man? Easily...

This is a fabulous daytime chic look. It is appropriate for SO many occasions including work and play (of course this depends on your job and the type of "playing" you will be doing:). It has a "I am not even trying" feel to it which is what makes it so cool. Pairing a dress with tights and boots is an easy and quick way to make more use out of a large portion of your wardrobe. Don't store away those dresses when it gets cold outside! Go and buy some tights:) I wear two pairs when it really gets cold for twice the protection. Plus, you can use one plain pair and one textured pair for funk. I love sharing my tricks!

Another great idea for winter warmth without the bulk, is layering a thin long-sleeve t-shirt underneath your bigger sweaters. Using a short sleeve sweater on top, as this model is showing, is a great change from the "typical" way of layering. It adds depth and creativity to a really accessible daytime look.

When picking out a winter coat, don't choose the most bulky and heavy one! I want you to be warm, but I want the world to know that you still have a body under there. Choose a style that has a cinched belt to give you a waist. This coat also has a bell skirt for the bottom half so it give you lots of room to pile on clothing underneath. I love the big fur collar because it only makes your waist look even smaller!!!

Finally, my favorite winter go-to look. Leggings and a longer sweater will be any gal's best friend, no matter what your age! For the more mature woman, choose a longer style sweater, leggings are still appropriate. You must pair this look with taller boots. It is not only important style wise, but your legs will be freezing otherwise! I also would add a pair of tights underneath your leggings just to make sure you are nice and toasty.

So there you have it, all of the ideas for cozy, comfy winter ensembles without all of the bulk. You are now chic and fabulous... at least until the spring:)

Over the Knee Boots: Can You Pull it Off???

Which one of these is not like the others? Come on, you can do it! You remember this little challenge from your grammar school days.... Let me give you a hint, two of these women should realize that although they are hot, this boot style is for a "less mature" woman. Sorry gals.

Rihanna hits the nail on the head by vamping up this cute and simple sweater dress. By pairing together these two pieces, she is keeping it sexy yet appropriate. She pulls in a very big trend right now, the over the knee boot, while keeping the look grounded.

And then there are the other two. Mariah Carey always causes my fashion brain to hurt. She just can't accept that curves can be beautiful when they are not completely being hugged by spandex material. Adding a pair of "hooker" boots only puts this already over-the-top look, more over-the-top. This outfit would be best worn by a 20 year old girl who is about to go out to the club. Not by an almost 40 year old woman in broad daylight. It is time to put away the spandex dear. You are a beautiful woman that does not need to have it all hanging out even if that is what you consider "your style". That is not a style, it is actually known as your late teens and 20's.... A time that is over:(

Now there is a bit more hope for J. Lo. I still think that she gets it right most of the time, but there are a few slip ups here and there. Mostly, she is now 40 and it is time for her to reflect that. Her thighs are more in shape then they have ever been, but unfortunately that does not mean that they should be wearing thigh high boots. I have been asked if there is a cut-off age for this trend and my simple answer is yes. Anyone over 35 probably should pack this possiblity up along with their spandex clothing. Hot or not, age appropriate clothing is a big plus in my book. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD NOT STILL BE SEXY. This just means that certain trends are not appropriate for you anymore.

For those of you that reflect Rihanna more than Mariah and J. Lo, here are two options for you. First we have the very pricey Christian Louboutins, totally hot, totally expensive. If you can pay this price, well then I am totally impressed and I want to be friends with you:) If not, you have a less expensive option that you can totally rock. Either way, this look will be here for a few seasons so it is worth investing in a pair. Choose high heels for a flashier version, but you can completely wear flat ones during the day with a longer sweater and leggings. Have fun, be sexy and remember that Julia Roberts in "Pretty Women" is not the only hooker who can wear hooker boots.

A Shout Out for Rihanna: American Music Awards FAB

I will be the first to admit that Rihanna has gone a bit crazy with her choices in fashion lately. I will follow that statement by reminding myself (and you) that she is an artist and fashion is an extension of that. But sometimes it really is just nuts.

The dress is nuts.... In the most fabulously amazing way. Holy crapola. This Marchesa dress is truly a piece of art. It is editorial high-end fashion at it's best and there is barely anyone in Hollywood who could seriously pull this off. That is until Rihanna put it on her hot little body. She has the edge and the fashion chutzpah to rock this to its fullest potential. This dress screams, go big or go home!

There also could not have been a more perfect event to wear this frock to. The AMA's land somewhere in between the Grammy's and the MTV music awards in terms of fashion and class. You wanna put on your party dress, but it shouldn't really be a gown. You also probably shouldn't be wearing a full blown leather jumpsuit of any kind... Save that for Kurt Loder.

So good job Rihanna, you killed it. I am sure receiving props from my Sass N Style blog was the recognition you were looking for when you chose this dress. Your welcome:)

Holiday Twist: Suit Up and Leave Your Party Dress at Home!

I know, I know, I have already chatted about Angelina Jolie's Akris white suit. It was so good though, that it was worth another mention. Not just Angelina's beautiful ensemble, but the white suit in general.

Holiday party season is upon us and I am looking for the anti-cocktail dress. How many party dresses can one girl own? Don't answer that, you might scare yourself.

A great option in these chillier winter months is a tuxedo. The age-old winter problem with a dress is that your legs are freezing and you have to find a layering piece to go with your look. Now you have covered up your cute new dress! Of course I love the idea of a classic black women's tux, but have you ever considered winter white? Well you should!

Even Bianca Jagger has done it. She went white and looked uber-chic. Ok, the Colonel Sanders style tie is a bit much, but hell, it is Bianca Jagger!

You may be asking, "All white in winter? Isn't it past Labor Day?" The answer is yes and yes. If it is just too much for you, try a cream tuxedo instead. It softens the bright element, but still has the same dramatic affect. You will stand out... In a good way!

If you are lucky enough to be in a warmer part of the world during this holiday season, change up your idea of a tuxedo. Emma Roberts shows that pants are not always a must when choosing a sophisticated white suit. She is still portraying a classic, yet sexy ideal. Add black tights and black pumps to funk up this concept and wear it in colder weather. Slightly alternative, a little bit funky, totally awesome.

Now although I do believe that this model should have opted for a shirt, the suit does speak for itself. When has a bra and necklace counted for a layering piece? I strongly promote a white suit for a nice change from the party dress, but in addition, it is a great foundation staple! You not only get an amazing white suit, but you get separates. You can really utilize a white blazer and white pants because of the multiple options for styling. The best part, it is seasonless! Yes ladies, you can wear this anytime of the year and to multiple occasions. Dress it up, dress it down, make it what you want it to be. The white suit is a must for all wardrobes, and of course, holiday parties!!!

Ah, it is that lovely time of year again when we get to spend our hard earned cash on lots and lots of gifts for those we love. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. Thinking about what to get everybody (I have 8 days of Hanukah, oy vey) can often times hurt my brain. I like to be creative and different, but sometimes a leopard snuggie just seems like such a good idea. It is simple, it is easy and the people look so cozy in the commercials.

Ok seriously, am I really going to buy a damn snuggie for anyone ever? Hell no. Go put on your bathrobe backwards and call it a day. I am not spending my hard earned cash on a re-vamped creation that has been around for years. Who the heck is buying those things anyway?????????

So here comes the plug... Wait for it..... Pause for anticipation....... That's right folks, I am the most creative and interesting gift you could possibly give! Am I being full of myself? Kind of, but I am laughing because I am so ridiculous so it is worth it:) Seriously though, I have had many a husband and a wife thank their significant other for doing something different and thinking outside of the box. They get to live like a celebrity by having an expert save them from the overwhelming strife that getting dressed, not to mention shopping, can cause. Plus the gift giver usually thanks me because they never have to hear their partner or friend complain that they have "nothing to wear" ever again! With a look book filled with up to 40 outfits, it is hard to say you don't own anything and you don't have anything to put on.....

So go on, be creative! Bring my style tips home by having myself or a Sass N Style expert show you that personal style should not be that difficult! At least it isn't when you hire one of us......:)

Photo Shoot Madness!

I must apologize. I am a bad fashion blogger. I have been MIA for an entire week! But, let me explain.... I have been a very busy bee working on a photo shoot for an amazing up and coming artist name Paige Christensen. She is not only cute, but extremely talented. It made it that much easier to pull fabulous clothing for her!

I was lucky enough to be the producer of this shoot which means I asked all of my talented friends to work on it. The photographer, Alberto Vasari, is an old friend from my Chicago days. He is insanely talented (I am not just saying this because I like him:) and deserves to be a worldwide photography sensation. The make-up artist, Laura Nadeau, is equally as awesome. She mostly does bridal (you should hire her:), so this was a fun project for us to work on together! Add in my great assistant Jessica and Alberto's photo assistant Maxwell, and you had a crazy (and talented) group.

My direction for the styling was simple and straight forward, make it quirky and edgy. With those two words, I just went for it. The great part about my job when I get to do photo shoots, is that I get to pull clothing from showrooms around the city. What are showrooms you ask? Designer's hire showrooms to represent their lines. On any given day, stylists, magazine editors or buyer's will be going to the showrooms to either pull clothing or check out the lines. The showrooms are basically the middle man between the designers and the world.

I had a busy week contacting showrooms that I thought would work for the shoot. Remember, I was going for edgy and quirky so the clothing at each of the showrooms had to represent this. Once I had the right places on board, it was time to pull. This quite literally means that I get to go in and point to as many items as possible and they sign them out for me to take to the shoot. It is like shopping for free! Except I don't get to keep anything, just borrow it. Good enough for me:)

Then there is the shoot itself. I love shooting days, no matter how long they are. It really is important to have a team that works incredibly well together. I was the producer of this shoot, so I really was the only one who knew everyone. Luckily, everyone played very nice. Things can get very silly very fast which is how I like to live so this works out well for me. Imagine putting together several insanely creative people who all want to make the vision work, it can be lots of fun! As you can see, Maxwell was testing out the shot before we actually had Paige come in. I suggested that he model on his own as he is obviously a natural:)

So there you have my excuse for being a bad fashion blogger, I hope it was a good one! As soon as the final shots come out I will be sure to share them with you. Kendra Scott Jewelry: Make Your Own Jewelry!

I love big, shiny things. They call to me in my sleep, "Come here and buy us Amy... You want to wear us Amy...." Just a normal night's sleep for a fashion stylist.

Kendra Scott jewelry is an awesome line that actually lets you create your own big, shiny things. She basically gives you the map and tools to choose your own fabulous color palette. It is simple and easy, not to mention fun.

When romping around Henri Bendel's a few weeks back, I came across this designer. I was a bit confused at first because there was a long table with tons of different stones in amazing colors. There were also a bunch of empty skeletons for earrings, necklaces and rings. It was quickly explained to me that this was a "do-it-yourself" type of jewelry project. Ooohhh goody!

Parisian Chic for a Daytime Stroll? Hell Yea!

When I have meetings all day all over the city, I have to make sure I look cute and professional.... Not to mention comfortable! This outfit literally started with a hat and a hair-do. I had a bra and underwear on and was having a brain fart when it came to my actual outfit. But have no fear, I barreled through it and managed to create one of my more favorite ensembles.

When my head hurts from trying to put together something amazing, I usually grab for my go-to foundation piece, a white button down. It is a no-brainer for almost any gal because it looks clean, crisp and sophisticated. If you have trouble closing it because of a "bust" issue, layer a white tank underneath. I paired it with my flare leg Seven jeans and called it a day. It really was my AWESOME gold 50's style jacket that made the outfit anyway:) Remember ladies, your outfit does not have to be the most complicated part of your look, your outer most layer can say it all! Especially if you are outside all day as I was.....

As for styling, the part that made this look the most interesting was the fact that the sleeves of my jacket were 3/4 length. This allowed the wide cuff of my tuxedo style white button down to peek out. The collar of the shirt also showed just enough to make the look a bit different. A jacket is not always just for warmth, it can be your look!

To finish out my fab Parisian chic ensemble, I put a day's worth of stuff into my Prada saddle bag. Let's not get crazy, I did not pay full price for this. I got it almost 6 years ago at Filene's Basement in Chicago. At the time dropping $400 on a purse was a lot, but I mulled it over and decided it would be well worth the large price tage. I have never regretted the purchase and have used it over and over and over and over.... You get the idea:)

Buy things you love and styling yourself will not be the most difficult task of your day....

Lovely Leather Dress: Dominatrix and Class Meet.

I am not usually an Angelina Jolie fan. Her style borders on boring, I just need a little more fun in my life. I understand that when you have that many children it is hard to take time for yourself, but that is why she has a stylist.

I had to give it up to her in this black leather Michael Kors dress though. It is so damn sexy and chic that it didn't matter if she paired it with nothing else. This dress did all of the talking. Do you have any idea how hard it is to make a leather sheath dress fit like this? Let me tell you... Very, very hard.

The addition of the gladiator heel was truthfully all that she needed to shine. She added a simple touch of color with the red ring and that was perfect. For as much as I know about Angelina (thank you tabloids), this dress matched her personality perfectly. It is simple and chic, yet completely edgy. She has matured in her older age, but can still kick anyone's ass. She is bad, look out Brad Pitt.

The Last Warm Day of Fall.... Go Colorful!

I felt so damn cute when I wore this that I had to share it with you! For some reason I always end up is more subtle colors (which is crazy because my personality is so loud!), so this was really fun for me. Why am I not wearing more color when it looks so freakin' good?!?

You may recognize this dress from my hosting gig as Rebecca and Drew for Fashion's Night Out. Part of the benefit of hosting events is that often times you get to keep what you wore. I am glad I wore this because it looks so good hanging in my closet, not to mention when I wear it! I paired it with another piece you might recognize, my Club Monoco lime green cardigan purchased at a consignment store. The color combination is not only chic, but completely eye catching. Too add a little bit of edge, I added a pointed toe black flat and layered gold and black bangles. Wearing a black bag as well would have been a bit harsh and overpowering, so I went with a more neutral camel color Sabina bag.

Overall I felt cute, sassy and completely appropriate for any situation. This is the type of look that will stand out and receive compliments without overpowering whomever wears it. It is also a great outfit because it will look good on most body types. A button-down dress is a comfortable choice for most sizes. The cinched style allows any woman to show off her curves properly. Love thy curves.

So next time you are deciding what to wear, think outside of the box. Pair together items that you never would have thought about. You just might surprise yourself and create something fabulous...

"I Feel Like a Size 6 Stuck in a Size 12." Common Problem,Good Solutions.

My friends are such good sports. Let's take Jessica here as an example. She just moved to NYC (yea for me) and offered up the idea of doing a blog post on her. "How much fun would it be to go "shopping" and show people how to look fabulous at any size?" Lots of fun.

So we went off to Lord and Taylor yesterday and played a bit of dress up. As the title of this post states, Jessica feels like the fashion world is against her. Why is every awesome piece made for a size 6? Not true Jessica! You too can look amazing! As her friend and fashion teacher, it was time for me to take control.

Jessica came wearing gray pants, a purple sweater, messenger bag and Danskin shoes. The sentence out of her mouth was a long-winded complaint about how annoying her pants were. They were uncomfortable and short. Basically, mama needs some new pants. As for the rest of the look, she already knows how I feel about the shoes.... I tell her all the time:) In all fairness, Jessica has some foot issues and needs to wear VERY comfortable shoes. I let her know that comfort and style can go hand in hand, but that was a large issue for another day/post. We were focusing on clothing here.

First up, a classic and elegant ensemble that has tons of versatility. She can wear this to the office, a dinner date or out for a night of "fancy" cocktails. The simplicity of the look makes it accessible, but the accents on the cardigan and the statement necklace make it fabulous! The sweater dress underneath, by Lily Pulitzer, was an empire waisted sheath. It was a great foundation piece for styling any way I saw fit! The cardigan, by Kate Hill, was a useful piece that can be worn anytime of the day. I simply buttoned two buttons at the empire waist of the dress to accentuate the fact that Jessica has curves. You want to show them off, not cover them with loose clothing! The attention is brought upward though the beading on the cardigan and the statement necklace. For wearability, I would add black tights and a high black boot or black high heel. Curvy and simple.

I love, love, love this outfit. It is cute, it is casual, it is sparkly! It works perfectly on Jessica for a few reasons. The t-shirt underneath has a beaded design directly down the middle. This draws the eye to the center, always a good idea to make anyone look more slender. By pairing it with this gray sweater and wearing it open, the black lines are only accentuating the design of the t-shirt drawing more attention to the middle. Perfect! I added a longer, black tank top underneath to give some length to the shirt. It was just too short and this is a simple way to solve the problem. Adding my favorite color jeans, gray, to this lots 'o gray ensemble was the perfect pick. Jessica needed new jeans and the "Not Your Daughter's Jeans" are the best option for curvy women. I threw on some color with her bracelets to take away from the monochromatic look. They added extra funk and fun.... Lo and behold, daytime chic was born.

Jessica feels hot. This is obvious by the pose change... Plus she told me in the dressing room. Jessica, it is true, you look hot. I love this flashy BCBG top. Every girl wants to sparkle a little no matter what her size! And why should that right be taken away? I hate when I see a room full of doubty clothing just because it is not a size 6. Boo. So I wanted to put Jessica in something that said, "Hey, look at me!" In a good way.... I again used the gray jeans because they looked good and Jessica loved them. I pulled a longer top with movement, yet it still had a shape. You never want to lose your shape when you are a larger size because it makes you look larger! You need to show that there is a body under there. This top was complimentary because it was fitted at the bottom and at the end of the sleeves. The final show stopper was the layered gold necklaces and big gold cocktail ring. As with the gray t-shirt with sparkle detail, I needed to draw the eye to the middle to create a more slender look. Long necklaces do this! They were not overwhelming to the fun shirt, but I wouldn't wear this look before 8pm.

So Jessica, you can look fabulous no matter what your size! Feeling amazing is most of the battle and my dear, you look pretty, damn hot is these outfits. I now send you off to the wolves of New York City, you are ready for your big debut:)

What Jeans to Wear When. Color DOES Matter.

Yes ladies, there is an answer to the age-old question, "What jeans should I wear today?". Ok, maybe this is not an age-old question, but many of you still ponder this thought when you wake up and when you go out. I am here to explain the proper place to wear different washes for jeans. There are about 9 million different colors for jeans, so I am just going to stick to a few basic go-to washes.

First up, the all-mighty dark blue wash. It is going to be the staple of your wardrobe so you should definitely own a pair. No matter who you are, what you do, where you go or how old you are, you should own a pair of dark blue jeans. They are definitely the most flattering and the most versatile. They will be your constant best friend and take you from the day into the evening effortlessly. They are the no-brainer choice for any occasion or time of day. I am making this pretty easy, eh? They are sophisticated for the daytime and classy enough for an evening event. The blue wash makes them accessible for more casual events, yet the dark color allows them to be easily paired with a funky top.

Next up, light blue. This really is a wash that is best left for the warmer months. Think spring and summer. Anytime after that just seems like you are confused about the season. They are a casual, comfortable, easy look, which is exactly what the warmer months are about. 'Nuf said.

And now for my favorite wash, gray. I just love these! Last season they were no where to be found and now this year, I walk into Bloomie's and there is an entire section dedicated to them. Apparently they got the memo... Finally! Just like the dark blue jeans, these are great for both day and night. I love them because they are neutral and different. Most people own some version of blue jeans, go outside of the box! These have an edgier feel, yet they are completely appropriate and wearable.This particular wash can also really go in any direction. Add high heels, a white tank and a motorcycle jacket for a great going-out look or layer on a longer cream sweater with black riding boots for daytime casual. They really do work always.

And now for your rough and hard side, black jeans. Depending on who you are, you can wear these during the day, but for most ladies this is an "only evening" jean. You have to have a pretty casual or funky career to be able to pull these bad boys off during the daylight hours. If you are part of the more straight- forward working force, these are reserved for a hard night of fun. They instantly give your look an edge. Unlike plain black pants, these are meant for rough riding even if you are only walking down the street to get a drink. They will add a tough side to even the daintiest of ladies which is why they are so alluring. Ok, the jean companies have gone 80's crazy. I completely understand that looks come and go, but this one should have stayed gone. It really does freak me out a little. But, for those of you that would like to wear this oh so 80's trend, I will give you a few tidbits of advice. This is your pop piece and nothing else can compete with them. You MUST keep the rest of your ensemble plain. There is no need to add any more 80's items to play up the theme. The theme is poured on your legs, people get it. Now, I may think I don't need to mention this, but I am going to just to make sure... These are only for nighttime!!! Your fun dive into your yester years should only be after 8pm. That's right, I put a time on it.

Bridal Shower Appropriate: Looking Great While Eating Cake.

Yesterday was a monsoon in Connecticut, not exactly the perfect day for a bridal shower. Does that mean I just packed up my things and left? Did I whine and complain and put on something less than fabulous? Well I did whine and complain, but I definitely still put on something amazing.

It was a brunch with a group of lovely ladies, most of which I have known since childhood. The bride is a fellow competitive ice skater from my youth (oh so long ago!) and her sister is a fellow competitive dancer. Yes, my mother was nuts and took me to all these activities. Throw in a few high school friends, my mom and all of the ice skating mothers and you have a bridal shower in a monsoon.

Luckily it is Connecticut and you merely have to walk from your car to the door. I am all about dressing for the weather, but I was home with one bag and one outfit, so I wore what I brought. It could have been worse, at least my legs were covered from the elements with tights.

My super cute outfit all began with my black, satin bubble skirt. About a month ago I hosted an event at Bloomingdales and I wore this lovely piece. I couldn't live without it, I had to have it. I knew it would have a good life with me if it moved into my closet. I paired it with a basic black tank top and my Club Monoco lime green cardigan. I actually got this cinched waist 50's style piece at a consignment store near my house. I hate paying retail when I am so good at searching!

To really push my 50's chic with modern day funk look, I added a handbag that I literally think I have worn once. I picked it up at Salvation army years ago and sadly this little electric blue wonder just sits in my closet. Truthfully, it really isn't my usual style, but a piece like this certainly comes in handy with the right outfit. Example: This outfit! I loved not only the complete throw back to another era, but the color combination really made the whole look pop. If you look closely you can also see I pulled out my favorite vintage citrine ring. It does match the cardigan, which I am usually whole-heartedly against, but it was such a small pop that it was the perfect compliment.

And finally, there was my necklace. Although this might look completely vintage, I only had to travel to Banana Republic to pick it up. I am sure a clever woman might be able to make this nifty piece on their own, I just wasn't feeling that clever the day I bought this:) It is simply a few bold trinkets, you could most likely pair together consignment store broaches, and voila, you have a fabulous necklace. It was the perfect topper to my fun, funky and fabulous monsoon bridal shower 50's chic with a modern twist look.

Big Calves? Small Calves? You CAN Own Tall Boots

Having worked with every size person on this planet (or pretty close to it), I can tell you that feet are always the biggest issue. "I can't wear heels. I will only wear heels. My feet are too wide. My feet are too narrow. My feet are too ugly, cover them up." The most common problem I have come across though is that people have the most trouble finding boots that fit their calves! It really is a wonder that more shoe designers have not taken this into account when creating their lovely lines for women of all shapes and sizes. That is until Michael Kors got smart.....

Let me begin this mission to find the perfect boots for your possibly not so perfect calves with a basic statement, I HATE STRETCH BOOTS. I have made this feeling pretty clear to anyone that will listen. They are tacky and cheap looking no matter how much you pay for them. For those of you that have followed my blog for a while, you might remember the new one that I tore Jill Biden the day of the inauguration. What on earth did this sophisticated, mature woman think she was doing in this ensemble? Pretty from the knees up, but everything on the bottom was a big ol' mess. She has the opposite problem from most women, her calves are too skinny. That is still no excuse to pull these Payless style shoes out for the biggest day in this countries history. Ug, oy, gross, yuck. No offense Payless:)

So now that I am done complaining, let me give you the solution: This year's line of Michael Kors boots. For curvy calves, for skinny calves, by gone it, he has done it. Or at least his team of designers has done it. He combined stretch material and leather to create a wearable boot for most any size calf. This combination allows the boots to remain stylish and sophisticated while still being realistic for ALL calves. Thank you Michael.

From the dressy version above to these more casual versions, he really hit the nail on the head. I am obsessed with riding boots and motorcycle boots because they add a bit of fun and theme to your look without overpowering it. You should have a good time with your footwear! Black boots do not equal boring. Don't ever give up on finding the perfect basic that will stand on it's own and be noticed by all of those around you. Not only are these boots stylish, but they really will be the answer to all of your calf problems. My Big Day at Bendels

I love fun and fabulous days! I had a meeting yesterday at Henri Bendel which was a great excuse to play in the store for an hour and a half. Yes, that is work to me! I was lucky enough to have a personal, guided tour from their very stylish marketing director. I was introduced to every designer, jewel, bag, scarf and anything else amazing that you can think of. A very good day if I might say so myself.

Just as Bendel's promotes, it is like a playground for the fashionable lady. So basically it is the very upgraded version of the feeling you used to get when you saw a McDonalds with a playground attached to it. Ooooh, I love that feeling! Everything is completely accessible so that you can try it on and see how much you really love it! I loved quite a bit yesterday.... The benefit and danger of their "only accessories" store, is that you really can afford most bobbles they are dangling in front of your face. It is truly the perfect "emergency shop" store. Quite simply, if you are having one of those days where you must buy something or you will die, this is the place to do it. No guilt attached because you did not break the bank!

My newest fun, favorite item is headbands. Love them. How stinkin' cute are they if you can really pull them off? I know I am 30, but I am a stylist and I look young so damn it, I am gonna do it! Don't I look so completely Blair Waldorf in this picture? Obviously I came in with the necklace, because these two crazy and fabulous pieces DO NOT belong together! I am on the search for the perfect headband right now... With all of the choices, I have to be meticulous about finding the exact right one. The benefit of my job (besides the fact that it is awesome), is that I can really search for what I want because I am always out looking at beautiful things. I do not have a time crunch to find things for myself. Lucky me:)

And don't forget about bags! They are one of the most important accessories you can own, if not THE most important. I ran into (literally) these amazing Rebecca Minkoff bags and immediately fell in love. It was actually at first sight, I saw them from accross the room and that was it, it was over. They are edgy and interesting, yet they would easily compliment any outfit without competing with it. This is the sign of a really great bag that will be worth the investment. Can it stand alone as a fantastic piece and mesh with everything you own? If the answer is yes, swipe the credit card, you need to own it.

I love accessories, I am now totally obsessed with Henri Bendel and you should be too. Fun, fabulous pick-me-up pieces mixed with higher end goodies make this a one-stop-shop for everything trendy, glamorous and chic.

The Infinity Scarf: It just keeps going and going and going....

There is always a new fashion craze and this time, the infinity scarf is it. I love when the wheel is re-invented. Just when you thought a scarf is a scarf is a scarf, they think of something brand new! Fun for me and fun for you.

I got one of these little goodies and began my afternoon of seeing what magical things I could do with it. How many ways can you wear the infinity scarf? I managed to create quite a few wearable options. I love the idea that something is not only comfy and cozy, but completely versatile and functional.

So here goes for the fashion show of me and my infinity scarf!

Basic, basic, basic. It ain't interesting, but it works. Don't I look like the model?:) You really need to feel this yummy piece in person, so delicious.

A great way to wear it if you are chilly once you wonder inside. Pull your infinity scarf down around your shoulders and look stylishly warm. I hate when it is too cold inside! This way you don't have to completely cover up your fabulous outfit by keeping on your coat, your scarf becomes part of your look!

This version reminds me of my former days as a competitive ice skater. Even if I had on a little ice skating dress, my neck always seemed to be cold! Wrap this little piece around your neck twice and you have an insta-neck warmer!

I feel like a winter princess wearing the scarf this way. I usually feel like a princess in my own mind, so this way everyone else is in on my reality! I just placed it over my head and allowed it to drape down. Nothing to fancy or tricky, but it definitely warms up my noggin and ears. Sometimes you just don't want a hat and a scarf! This is a classic and sophisticated way to wear the infinity scarf.

And for my scarf tying finale! Jackie O, here I come. I should probably get into a convertible immediately and drive through the Alps. I guess I need to take the alternate option and walk down the streets of New York City looking just as fabulous. I just wrapped it around my neck and looped it over my head. Again, nothing to complicated, just chic and fabulous!
